1976 -- 30th  Anniversary

Chapel

It was a day to remember! July 14, 1976 was the 30th anniversary of the UP Beta Sigma Fraternity. The celebration started with an early mass at the UP chapel. Brod Cris Michelena who was GP at the time, read some passages from the Bible inspiring everyone to an attitude of thanksgiving for unbreakable bonds of brotherhood.

Transition to Motorcade

After the service, the brods regrouped at the parking lot to board their respective vehicles. The fun was about to begin.

And off they went! From the chapel, the MOTORCADE paraded around the campus. At every turn, vehicles kept adding up as brods arrived from all over. The normally quiet university was roused by the honking of horns, coupled by boisterous cheering and shouting.

Tambayan

The convoy ended at the TAMBAYAN where more brods were already waiting. Brods from UP Manila arrived to join the festivities but soon took over. Impresario Jun Vale began entertaining everyone with his standard teasing and mocking that progressed to a little jig and ended with a humping motion like his favorite jockey on the homestretch – which left everyone roaring with laughter.

All through the day, the ladies who walked by the tambayan received roses or bookmarkers from the brods. In the evening was the much-awaited jug-a-lug.

1977 -- 31st  Anniversary

KAMIA DORM  - 1977, 11 July

In 1977, 44 years ago around this time, the brods were doing the rounds of the Ladies Dorms inside the Campus. Many days before that, long nights were dedicated to rehearsing and preparing for the big event, the HARANA, which happens only once a year.

Top singers, Toti Belda, Willie Baldoria, Sammy Lazo and Bong Medina performed solo numbers. There were also group renditions with enchanting harmonies and captivating melodies. Butch Madarang and Babes Ignacio provided the instrumentation while the rest of the group delivered the chuwariwap bit ala Temptations/CSNY and additional instruments to the delight of the ladies.

Sammy Lazo's rendition of "Ventura Highway" and Ezra Castillo’s “One of These Days” were enough to melt every heart.

ILANG-ILANG DORM - 1977, 12 July

The GP at that time was Rudy Oviedo, so he did the introductions and acted as Emcee.

The dorm leader would thank the team, and once in a while the ladies would reply in song. There were many romantic relationships which resulted from these occasions. Some progressed as boyfriend-girlfriend. Others went on to be husband and wife (which was the objective of many brods).

SAMPAGUITA DORM - 1977, 13 July

Who can forget the songs “The Harder I Try (the Bluer I Get)” and “Love the One You’re With” of Toti Belda? His husky, baritone voice progressing to high-pitched belting that made all listeners swoon.

And of course, it would not be complete without the outstanding participation of the backup singers.
