UP Betans Win Overall Team
Championship in
Prestigious 30th Mango Tee Golf Tournament
by Gilbert Joven
The Alabang Country Club recently celebrated its Pearl Anniversary
(30th) of the Mango Tee. This prestigious golf tournament was attended by
nearly 800 of the best amateur golfers in the Philippines, including some
coming from abroad.
Two UP Beta Sigmans, Julius Cada and myself, entered as a team in this
member-guest tournament in the Class B Category. The other Betans who
joined were Brod Eddie Jose and Brod Torch Manalang. It was a 6-day golf
tournament (Feb 3 - Feb 8) with a shot gun start in the morning and
afternoon due to the number of participants.
Brod Julius and I started our golf game on Feb 4 at 6:15 AM. There was
still a hovering mist on the fairway when we started. We ended our golf
game with a score of 75, Julius contributed 33 points while I scored 42
points. Our team score was slightly behind 2 teams who scored a 77 and 76
respectively, a not-so-good performance. But we decided to do better on
the next playing day.
Our 2nd day was on Feb 7 at 12:15
PM tee off. We had a good start but we faltered along the way and ended up
with a total score of 78, Julius scored an even par of 36 while I was able
to maintain my previous score of 42. Our total team score for the
tournament was 153. Julius and I were a bit worried, as our total team
score would not be good enough to compete in the overall team standing,
but might have a chance to win in the Class B Category (we were Class B
Champions in 2011).
At the end of Friday, Julius and I got very excited when we saw our names
on top of the leader board with our score of 153, the second team coming
from Class A with a score of 150. But we did not let off our guard yet, as
there were still players on Saturday and they could still make a last
ditch effort to overcome our score. So, Julius and I waited for the Awards
Night on Saturday Feb 8. I visited the Adoration Chapel on Saturday
morning to ask for God's help and blessings.
On the Awards Night, the winners of each class, ABCD, Champion and
Runner-Up were announced but we did not hear our names in the Class B
category. But, lo and behold, when the Overall Team Champion winners were
called, our names, Gilbert Joven and Julius Cada, were announced. Wow, to
me, this is a lifetime achievement in my golf career. Julius and I were called to
the stage to receive our humongous trophies and beautiful TW STEEL Wrist
Watches. What is also great is that our names will be inscribed in the
Perpetual Trophy of the Mango Tee Golf Tournament, displayed at the Club.
Next year, 2015 is another Mango
Tee Golf Tournament. Well, Brod Julius, can we have a repeat (or
three-peat) of this huge
golf achievement? Abangan. . . . . . . . .
