I mourn the passing of Brod Ely. He was one of the
many bigger than life figures that we looked up to when we joined
the fraternity in 1962.

It is with sadness that I remember ka-batch Ely
Aglibut, who was our co-conspirator in many youthful adventures.
That included many boxing bouts with brods and assorted others.
Our gloves were contributed by another
batch '60 brod, Gaylord Bautista. They were thin, 8-oz Benlee
leathers, and Ely and I fought many friendly
and not-so-friendly sparring sessions at the DMST with his fellow
cadet officers. Brod Nestor (Toti) Quiambao
was the man to beat there. We also fought against the Sigma Kon
Ratbu of Vet Med, where Brod Willy Quejada clocked
me one in the head that had my ear ringing for one week! Those
were painful days! The boxers I remember included
Alex King, batchmate Eddie Baguio, Nelson Guerrero, and the
formidable Mon Tongko.
Cheers Brod Ely, and all those with you waiting at our the table in the sky.

Brod Ely Aglibut was “The lightning that strikes
even in the absence of rain and thunder.” His other alias was
“Colt 45”. Then another,
as Brod Bobby Manansala writes below.
Yes, Brod Bobby. Even titans like Brod Ely Aglibut
thread the same path as we all do. It reminds all of us of our own
immortality,
something we almost never considered when we were young. I’ve
known Brod Ely Aglibut since my initiation days, when he asked me
to
report to his home in Area (?), near the old gym and swimming
pool. His reputation came ahead of him, but there was no way I
would back
out from my pursuit of becoming a Betan. But alas! I found that
Brod Ely Aglibut was kind at heart and did not lay his hands on
me. And
like Brod Jimmy Santos who just passed on last month, all he did
was indoctrinate and asked me to bring a rose to a lady.
Even when he was no longer a UP student, he would
often visit the Tambayan, where he at times would banter with
younger Brods. Kind
and gentle as he was to Brods, he was true to his reputation as a
fiercely loyal Betan and fighter.
I learned over the internet that while in Palawan
where he finally settled, he had bee fighting cancer these past
few years.
But God had his plans, and Brod Ely called him
back. Yet his name will live among us Betans for many, many years
more. He gave so
much love to us Brothers and with his passing, he is getting so
much of what he gave.
Enjoy your other life with your other batchmates,
Brod Ely.

Tang, this is really hard to believe...Is
the fiercest warrior of our time really gone? Maybe true for
ordinary mortals but Ely Aglibut?
It is incomprehensible for me, just unbelieveable! ...He told me
to remember his ALIAS as ELISIOSKI TEJADASKI AGLIBUTIM and who
would ever
forget that menacing, fearsome hunk of a Betan! TEN YEARS AS A
BETAN! he proudly proclaimed when he commemorated his tenth
anniversary
as a Beta Sigman more than 50 years ago...and we who were younger
brods than him could only smile in awe and marvel at his being
fiercely
fanatic even then.... An Ely Aglibut would never fall, just
stagger a little bit perhaps......
Tang, I can't help but go back to the good ol' days with the brods
hanging out at the old A&S tambayan so let me just add something
to
the Ely Aglibut legend as coined by those boisterous and totally
fearless bunch, "THE LIGHTNING THAT STRIKES EVEN WITH THE ABSENCE
OF TEETH"
and even Ely would smile at that playful reference to his missing
front teeth....

I was with Ely Aglibut in 1970 at PSBA and during
that time Only Once in the history of the school
where the Beta Sigma Fraternity was in power. Ely Aglibut was the
Corp Commander of ROTC,
Danny Rodriguez was head of the school paper and I was the
Chairman of the Student Council.
Beta Sigma ruled.
I will not forget Ely Aglibut because he was so genuine. Inspite
of his busy schedule he accompanied me
to Fort Bonifacio because he wanted to help me get an exemption
for ROTC, and we got it.
Ely Aglibut and I were in Little Quiapo eating and
that was during the time that APO fraternity and Beta Sigma was at
war.
Many APO members surrounded us but Ely did not bulge. He placed
two hand grenades on top of our table and his 45 caliber
pistol was in his waist. Nobody touched us that night and we
continued eating. That was a hell of a night I will never
forget....
Ely we will miss you...…
To Ely Aglibut - A Real Betan !!!
