Memorial Day & Betans

by Norman Bituin

Today, May 26, 2014, is a federal holiday in the United States for remembering the men and women who died while serving in the country's armed forces. Coming back home from a week's vacation last night, I opened my inbox this morning and read Johnny Singh's email:

"happy bday and happy veteran's day to you and to all members of armed forces,

especially to our brods that served and still serving."

Twenty three years ago, two of UP SoCal Chapter's members served in "Desert Storm" in the Persian Gulf War: Johnny Singh, UPLB '68 and Carl Zabat, Jr., UPD '83. I remember we ran feature articles on them in two issues of the "Los Angeles Betan", which I had edited from 1991-92. I dug out my copies of these vintage newsletters and thought of re-publishing them here in our website in remembrance and in honor of our country's veterans.

Brods Johnny and Carl had since retired or left the military service.  Johnny is fully retired and is the Vice GP of UP SoCal. Carl works for the Department of Justice Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) and, at last report in April 2013, is the OIC of the Immigration Jail in Denver, Colorado.
