The drizzling, ‘duck weather’ last Sunday, December 16th, did not deter the UP Beta Sigma SoCal Brods and families to gather for a hearty lunch at the historic San Antonio Winery and Retaurant in the heart of downtown Los Angeles.

In 1917, Santo Cambianica, an Italian man from the northern Italy province of Lombardy, immigrated to Los Angeles and started the winery at its current location. Hoping for good luck, he dedicated the winery to Saint Anthony (in Italian: San Antonio) by naming it as such. When Prohibition was enacted in 1920, Cambianica asked for permission from the Catholic Church to continue operating his winery for communion wine. Granted such permission, he continued the winery's life. The winery has been declared as historical monument #42 in the city of Los Angeles. The winery also operates a wine shop, restaurant, and banquet hall.

Surrounded by oak casks of aging wines in the Heritage Cellar Room of one of the city’s oldest eateries enjoyed for decades by Angelenos in the know, the SoCal Betan family celebrated the holiday season with sumptuous Italian and Continental fare at the Maddalena Restaurant.

Wine and music kept the festivities upbeat through the rest of the afternoon. Christmas carols, pop songs and sentimental ballads kept the guests entertained. The toy donation drive initiated by GP Aman Carolino generated a solid response with bags of goodies to be turned over to the Los Angeles Police Department Community Relations Agency. The children of East Los Angeles will benefit from the generosity of the fraternity.

As in the past, the warmth of camaraderie, the laughter and the renewal of  friendship made this year’s Christmas party memorable.
