Expression of Appreciation

Edsel Arceo ‘73

Last year, I said the medical mission was the perfect excuse to come home with Brods Aman and Nonoy.  This year, wala nang excuse kasi sumama pauwi si Mayette.  But I’m glad she decided to join me because last year, I had wished to share with her a most wonderful experience of working in the medical mission.

They say volunteerism in any form brings a sense of fulfillment to oneself.  And I agree, but not only is it a fulfillment, but it also is a nourishment to the soul.  Especially, when you know you have helped someone who has otherwise thought nobody cares, like Aling Emma complaining of a severe cough.  And afterwards she says, “Maraming Salamat sa tulong ninyo.”  Aling Emma among all others would not have benefited the much needed medical/dental care outside of our special project we all know as the Tito De Santos Medical and Dental Mission.

Now in its 5th consecutive year, and this being my last year as Grand Princep of the U.P. Beta Sigma of Southern California, I will not fail to remember your unparalleled support.  Uulitin ko, “Maraming Salamat sa inyong lahat mga Brods.  Sa ipinakita ninyong pagtulong, pagmamalasakit, at higit sa lahat sa pagtitiwala.” I will continue to be grateful to the Lord and His divine guidance for the privilege of helping others.  Lastly, to our beloved Brod Tito’s wife, Viching, who will always be the heart and soul of this project of love to others.

What struck me to enter the U.P. Beta Sigma Fraternity in 1973 was the brotherhood I witnessed, and it’s that same brotherhood that has kept us all in service to the fraternity, always strong and unbroken, true to our mission of helping others.  As I grow older in age and wisdom, with a weathered soul and expected perfection, I have come to realize that our mission in helping others is a fundamental responsibility regardless of one’s stature in life.  I hope you all share with me in this duty.  I have said it before and I say it again, I am proud to be part of this brotherhood with a purpose engaged in service to others, and this is what truly empowers our kinship.  It is with gratitude to the Lord that we offer our time, talent, and treasures, and it is His continued blessing and the strength He provides us that we will continue to do so.

It is my hope that we may all continue our fraternity’s mission for a common purpose of “helping others as they continue to meet each of their needs with dignity.”  With our combined efforts, we will realize our commitment to our journey of making a difference and making the U.P. Beta Sigma Fraternity as the fraternity of choice.  Thank you Brods for your valiant efforts.  Mabuhay ang Beta Sigma!
