UP Beta Sigma and
UP Sigma Beta Sponsor Mindanao Medical-Dental Mission
Article Written by: MOTR Dominique John Contrata, 3rd Year BS Architecture
The UP Beta Sigma Fraternity and the UP Sigma Beta Sorority Association of
UP Mindanao held last 18 February 2011 a Medical and Dental Mission at the
UP Mindanao Infirmary. This event was supported by the Biology Society (BioS)
and sponsored by the BSF Davao Alumni Assembly.
The activity started with a turn-over ceremony of the UP Infirmary by
UPBSF represented by Brod Sebastian “Anggie” Angliongto (LB ‘57) to the
UPMin Administration headed by Chancellor Gilda Rivero. In his speech,
Brod Anggie stressed that UPMin students should give back something of
significance to their alma mater. He added that through pagkakaisa and
service to the university and the community, organizations in the campus
should work together to help improve UP Mindanao.
In her acceptance speech, Chancellor Rivero highlighted the
administration’s efforts to increase the budget for UP Mindanao. It may be
noted that the House Committee on Higher and Technical Education approved
early this month the proposed Php 1.225 billion supplemental budget for UP
Mindanao through House Bill 3076.
Brod Anggie Angliongto and Chancellor Rivero toured the Brods and Sisses,
and the UPMin students, faculty and staff around the infirmary after the
ceremonial ribbon cutting. The Medical and Dental Mission then followed.
The services were open to UP Mindanao students and employees, and
residents of two (2) barangays in the immediate vicinity.
The event was not an easy feat. The resident brods reported early at the
infirmary area to help the 55th Army Brigade assemble the makeshift tent
in the midst of continuous rains. Alumni Brods Danny Abad (LB ’74), Jun
Matilac (UST), Jayrome Rala (Min ‘00C), and Dr. Khalil Guinomla (’00B)
arrived early and helped the residents assemble the tent.
Some resident brods and sisses, and BioS members who served in medical and
dental missions took over in getting the vital signs of the patients, in
lieu of 10 nurses who were not able to make it due to later notice.
Brod-doctors made themselves available for the free check-up and minor
surgeries—they were Brods Jun Matilac (UST, pediatric surgeon), Stephen
Tay (LB, surgeon), and Khalil Guinomla (Min, general medicine), Mike
Jamiana (DMSF, surgeon), Tomas Dimaandal (DMSF, surgeon), and Betan-friend
Dr. Mark Lacsamana. Dentist-brods from the Davao Medical School Foundation
were also present during the mission to provide free dental check-up,
tooth extraction, and other dental services—they were Brods Regner Rubio,
Kenneth Berbigal, and Hexel Verano. Other Betans who were present during
the event were Brods Ding Canave (LB ’53), Mon Carpio (Dil ’63), Armand
Roguel (CLSU), Jay Reodica, and Sis Stella Soriano (LB).
At lunch, the residents, alumni and BioS members had a boodle fight lunch
at the UPMin Student Center were we shared the 10 kilos of rice, 12 kilos
of deep-fried catfish, and 6 lechon manoks donated by the generous Brod
Anggie.
Around 200 medical and 50 dental patients more were served and provided
medicines after lunch. The clinic closed at around 3:30 PM. Most of the
distributed medicines were brought by Brod Billy Sevilla of UP Diliman (7
crates of medical supplies and medicines, most of which came from the Tito
de Santos Medical Mission held in Diliman).
On behalf of the UP Min residents and the hundreds of poor fellows in
Brgys. Mintal and Bago Oshiro, we would like to thank those who, in one
way or another, helped us make this event successful. We hope for your
kind assistance in future medical and dental missions in campus as we
strengthen our ties with the students, and the UPMin community and
administration.
Cheers to all of you!
