UP Beta Sigma and UP Sigma Beta Sponsor "Battle of the Bands"

at Tatak UPMin 2011 and 16th Founding Anniversary

by Bert James Millendez

Tatak UPMin is one of the closing activities in line with the month-long celebration of the 16th founding anniversary of UP Mindanao. The event, which was composed of two parts, was held at the Matina Town Square (MTS), Davao City.

The first part was the “Mistress Competition,” where straight male participants acted and pretended as if they were really gay. This competition was originally known as “Mistress of the Dorm,” which was organized by male dormers of the Philippine Coconut Authority and Elias B. Lopoz Hall dormitories in 1996.

The second part of the Tatak UPMin was the UPMin Betans-organized and sponsored Battle of the Bands. The competition was attended by twelve (12) bands (9 were entries to the competition, while 3 were guest bands) whose members were composed of UPMin and non-UPMin students and/or alumni.

All the resident Brods and Sisses were present during the event, but to make our presence more visible, we wore large-sized identification card showing our role as the “Event Organizer,” including the Betan seals (Fraternity and Sorority). Likewise, we were joined by resident brods from University of Mindanao Chapter and some alumni brods, namely: Sam Strong (SU), Jay Reodica, Boji Bote (UPMin), Quincy Salig (UPMin), Oscar Escudero, Santy Lamorena (UPDil). UPMin Sigma Betans Lenzy Lavina, Paula Caballero, Lara Lubag and Inin Sinsona, and Celeste del Rosario (UM) also showed support during the event.

During the first part of the 2nd semester AY 2010-2011, Sigma Beta MIS Fammy Llaguno and I planned to have a Battle of the Bands Competition in the campus but we couldn’t spot the right event to conduct the planned activity. We then tapped the support of the University Student Council and convinced them to partner with us in implementing this activity. The UPMin Betans offered to be the major sponsor of band competition during the Tatak UPMin night, and we were fortunate that we got their nod.

The event was very successful because the competition was participated by 9 competing bands, and the MTS tent was fully loaded with audience. However, the lack of budget to organize this event was evident in the prizes that were given to the participants: the first prize received P1,500.00; second prize, P1,000.00; third prize, P500.00. Although we lacked finances, we are proud to say that the event was very successful in terms of visibility and having it known to the UPMin and non-UP audience of the Fraternity’s presence and activeness in upholding the campus traditions.

(This event was shown in a segment of a local documentary show of GMA-7, Issue Karon, on 19 March 2011 where the

large UPBSF and UPSBS Seals were displayed.)
