UP Mindanao Brods and Sisters Reap First Place Plus Cash
by Bert James C. Millendez 2008A, UPBSF Mindanao Grand Princep

EVENT: ANNUAL PASIKLABAN IN UP MINDANAO. The year 2010 is without a doubt The Year of UP Beta Sigma Fraternity in all our campuses from Luzon to Mindanao as ably documented by our tireless Webmaster. Among our contributions during this glorious and victorious year, we in UP Mindanao garnered the most coveted first place of this event that includes a 15 thousand cash prize. Our 2010 performance is a stark contrast to the one last year (unfortunately, at last place).

Pasiklaban is an annual event that started in 2006, with the University of the Philippines Alumni Association (UPAA)-Davao Chapter as sponsors. Pasiklaban aims to bring together all the UP Alumni to have fun and watch the UP students showcase their talents and skills.

We were the ONLY fraternity/sorority who joined the Pasiklaban, which could mean that we are the strongest organization in the campus. The other student organizations who joined the contest were BACA ni Oble (organization of BA Communication Arts students who won 2nd prize), Katingugan (group of music enthusiasts who won the 3rd prize), Dugong Anthro (BA Anthropology students), and UPMin Dance Ensemble. Apparently, no Greek-letter society felt worthy enough to join the competition. Hehe.

This year’s performance is a story of teamwork and solidarity, not only among the performing Brods and Sisses but also by the residents and alumni who came to see us perform and lend their unflagging support.

We only had 8 days to prepare the concept, choreography, script, storyline and props but we still reigned supreme over 4 other course-based student organizations. As the GP, I assigned former GP Mon Alberto Echevarria (06-A) to be the director of our performance. Various ideas, though, on the concept came from all of us. We modified and adjusted the script and choreography every time there were better suggestions or opinions from the Brods and Sisses.

All the resident Brods and Sisses were present at the event to extend their support to the performers. Performing groups were only allowed a maximum of 18 org-members.

The alumni brothers were likewise very supportive as they had the loudest cheers during our performance—audience impact being 25% of the criteria. The alumni present were Brods Anggie Angliongto (LB 57), Danny Abad (LB 74), Adel Oviedo (LB 78), Bimboy Yap (Dil 66), Tito Ilagan (Vis 89), Stephen Tay (LB), Norman Dumalag (LB 92), Glenn Sanchez (LB 96), Khalil Guinomla (Min 00B), Jayrome Rala (Min 00C), Boji Bote (Min 06) and Miko Herrera (Min 06), among others.

We were all very thrilled during the awarding of prizes for we know that our competitors were equally prepared in their performance. But when Mrs. Aida Lacsamana Reyes, the lead judge, was asked if the judges had difficulty in deciding who the best performance was, we then knew we would bag the first prize. Mrs. Lacsamana said prior to the announcement of winner that they didn’t have difficulty in choosing the best performance because they unanimously agreed that there was only one group whose performance was very fluid, mastered, and best fit the theme “Maligaya and Pasko.”

A street party followed, also sponsored by the UPAA. The street of Anda was filled with so much happiness, bonding moments, sharing, dancing and booze. Hehe. J The Brods and Sisses didn’t go home until 2:00 am to let the students and faculty hear our resonating cheers during the celebration. We showed them the strong presence UP Betans, both alumni and residents, for them to realize that UPBSF is, indeed, the Fraternity of Choice!

We look forward to another victory during the UPMin Parolan on 17 December 2010 at Mintal Campus.

Cheers!!!
