Los Banos Residents Chapter
36th Operation: Big Brother’s Story of Success by Jec Cabaguason'04
The Operation: Big Brother never fails to put smiles on the faces of the people of Los Baños. OBB, the longest- running outreach activity in UPLB has again extended the warmth of the Christmas Season to the less fortunate children of Los Baños last December 17, 2009 at the Senior’s Social Garden, UPLB Campus.
The Fraternity hosted more than a hundred children and eighty parents in a day of fun games, lunch, and gift giving, and giving of relief goods. The Fraternity, through the Operation: Big Brother, has served the community of Los Baños for more than three decades. And for years, OBB has been a household name for the people of Los Baños.
The town of Los Baños was also affected by the super typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng. The Fraternity has witnessed firsthand the devastation brought about by these natural calamities and decided to offer this 36th Operation: Big Brother to the families that were greatly affected.
With the keen sense of leadership of the chairman of the activity, Leo Angelo Perez 2008c, the Fraternity was able to gather enough funds to realize our plans for this activity. Every single night for two weeks groups of resident Beta Sigmans would visit the residence of an Alumnus and render Christmas carols. The OBB Committee was able to solicit from Alumni Betans based on the United States and other parts of the globe. In addition, financial support and guidance from Alumni Betans here in Los Baños were also overwhelming.
The Residents also spent sleepless nights wrapping the Christmas gifts, packing the relief goods, preparing the things needed for the activity to go smoothly. But of course, this did not happen without the spirit of alcohol around the Fraternity House. The diligence and sacrifices of the Resident was worth it.
On the morning of December 17, the residents arrived early to place tarpaulin streamers and posters all over the venue. Necessary arrangements were already made with the families and the kids were picked up by the designated residents. The parents and kids were properly registered and a “batang OBB’ shirt was given to each child.
The fun games started at around 9:00 in the morning. The OBB Committee prepared an array of fun games which included parlor games like “paper dance”, “egg catching”, “sack race”, “bring-me-what-I-want”, rabbit wall gun, and “calamansi relay”. The parents, on the other hand, enjoyed the game of “hep-hep hooray”. After the fun games, the children were exhausted and hungry. The OBB Committee prepared a sumptuous lunch for everyone with free-flowing ice cream as dessert.
After the lunch, we continued with the fun games and some dance presentation by Jollibee. The residents were already exhausted but the enjoyment seen in their faces said otherwise. Clearly, the Brods were enjoying the activity as much as the children.
After which, we proceeded with the giving of Christmas gifts to the children. The OBB committee prepared lovely toys that the kids surely enjoyed. These children, having lost so much during the typhoon, had smiled once more. The sight of a happy child and a true sense of gratitude inspired the residents.
After the children, it was the parent’s turn to receive their Christmas gifts and grocery package. Before the gift giving, we were graced by the presence of the UPLB Chancellor, Luis Rey I. Velasco. Chancellor Velasco gave a short speech and expressed his high respects to the Fraternity and the nobleness of the Operation: Big Brother. One after another, we called the names of the parents and handed them two Christmas gifts and a grocery package composed of canned goods, rice, bottled water, soap and instant noodles.
The activity was covered by the National Broadcasting Network and was featured in their show “@ your service” last December 24, 2009. This was made possible through the efforts and support of Brod USEC Rolly Reyes who is worthy of great appreciation.
The success would not have been possible without the support of the UP BETA SIGMA FRATERNITY INTERNATIONAL, UP BETA SIGMA FRATERNITY NORCAL Chapter, and the members of the BIG BROTHER’S BOUNTY.
The resident Betans especially the OBB Committee would also like to extend their deepest gratitude to the US-based Betans, Johnny Singh and Jim Gonzalvo who selflessly supported the 36th OBB. The locally based Betans also deserve the sincerest appreciation. Lastly, we salute and honor the Los Baños Betans who overwhelmingly supported this activity and welcomed the Residents to their houses to carol.
This activity is truly a success. UP Beta Sigma Fraternity has again touched the hearts of the people of Los Baños. With the unified UP Beta Sigma Fraternity, the Operation: Big Brother will always continue as a trademark of the nobility of our great Fraternity.

UPLB Chancellor Dr. Rey Velasco is guest speaker. He calls our GP Jec in front and extols the UP Beta Sigma for having programs such as these for the upliftment of the image of fraternities in campus and for helping com- munities that surround UPLB. He said that the works of fraternities such as what Beta Sigma has done in OBB provide encouragement to the parents in focusing deeply in the education of their children and ultimately in their children entering the University of the Philippines.
