UP Visayas, Pahampang 2016

by Mark Aaron

The UP Beta Sigma Fraternity and UP Sigma Beta Sorority together with the University Student Council of the University of the Philippines Visayas hosted the yearly Prima Facie, an Oratorical and Extemporaneous speaking contest as part of the Cultural Events of Pahampang 2016. This year’s theme is “Paving the way for just and lasting peace.”

The Fraternity and Sorority adviser, Prof. Moniq Muyargas, together with two more faculties and peace advocates, Prof Teddy Tan Jr. and Prof Jose Rene Sansait, served as judges during the event. Contestants from different academic organizations in the University battled with wit and wisdom as they voice out their opinion about the real meaning of just and lasting peace. The current Philippine situation on the on-going peace talk between the Republic of the Philippines and the National Democratic Front inspired the residents to come up with this theme. The residents believed that, UP is the microcosm of the Philippine society and thus socio-political awareness among its constituents, the students, faculty and staff should be promoted in all levels.

Aside from Prima Facie, the residents also hosted a badminton tournament. It was a yearly tradition of the Fraternity to sponsor sports event during the Pahampang 2016.

This year’s Pahampang is a month-long sports and cultural events for the whole month of October 2016.
