A Celebration of Art and Tradition: BARE: Nude in the 21st Century
by James Salazar
The Filipino talent, especially in the arts, had long been celebrated and
had been an integral part of the formation of Philippine history and
culture. Paintings and sculptures from various Filipino are proudly
displayed in the walls and halls of various museums standing as testaments
to the talent the country has to offer.
In the tradition of celebrating this splendid talent, the UP Beta Sigma
Fraternity and the UP Diliman Office of the Chancellor, through the Office
for Initiatives in Culture and the Arts, and the UP College of Fine Arts
Student Council held BARE: Nude in the 21st Century, an on-the-spot nude
painting session featuring artists from the UP College of Fine Arts and
other fine arts school from Metro Manila.
The painting session was held at the Consunji Room of the Bahay ng Alumni
last February 22 and was part of the month long celebration of the UP
Diliman Month and the Diliman Arts Month. Twenty-one artists featuring
different medium ranging from acrylic to pencil and more showcased their
talents of painting the nude body of the female model Elora Espano into
their canvas and sketch pads. Given the changes of our times, we get to
see various interpretations of the human body by the creative minds of the
artists. From realistic to colorful to abstract, the painting session
audience was in awe as colors and sketches come to life as it was painted
by the gallery of artists present for the event.
A total of over twenty artworks - of different sizes and medium - were
produced during the session led by painting session Art Director Brod
Carlo de Laza. All of these works will be put on exhibit sometime in July
2015 as part of the celebration of this year’s Betan Month. The works will
also be donated to different UP offices through the Office for Initiatives
for Culture and the Arts. The easels used for the painting session will be
donated to the UP College of Fine Arts for use of the students in the said
college.
The night had been a testament to what tremendous talent that the country.
It showed us a glimpse that the creative genius of the Filipino is still
and will always be a great part of the Filipino culture. The
interpretation of the medium showcased what is one of the most interesting
facets of the thriving arts community in the University of the
Philippines.
