UP Baguio Beta Sigma Fraternity 40th Anniversary Ball
by Ron Isaiah Fernandez Ramos, 17-A
Four decades of producing excellent service, practicing true brotherhood, and being a family of truly admirable noble men – these may best describe the UPB Beta Sigma Fraternity, its rich heritage, and its recent history.
Admittedly, UPB Beta Sigma Fraternity did
not escape the catastrophic changes that were a stricter school administration
and a school demographics of young college men losing interest on fraternities
in general and afraid of commitments. These changes seem to have put the
brotherhood in turmoil, but as excellence runs in every Beta Sigmans, these were
all taken as challenges and is a work in progress.
Last 2 October 2017, the resident and
alumni brods of UP Beta Sigma Fraternity across different generations went to
have a seminar, planning of projects, and bonding throughout the day; before the
40th Anniversary of the UPB Beta Sigma Fraternity. With this fellowship, the
relationship of the resident brods and the alumni continued to flourish, and the
camaraderie between them concretize even better. The agenda discussed addressed
the concerns of the UP Baguio Chapter.
Fiesta Beta Sigma was launched in
celebration of the 40th Anniversary of the UP Baguio Beta Sigma Fraternity and
the 38th Anniversary of the UP Beta Sigma Ladies Corps by the resident brods and
LC’s with the help of the alumni association. UP Baguio Beta Sigma Fraternity
donated 2 electronic billboards to serve its purpose as an
environmental-friendly way to disseminate updates from the administration and
different organizations. Along with the Ladies Corps, the “pakain” was
successful as it catered students, faculty, and staff of UPB. Fiesta Beta Sigma
stands as one of the grandest events UP Baguio has experienced first-hand.
The resident brods and LC’s then went to
the Anniversary Ball located at Marco Polo Ortigas, Manila. Resident brods and
LC’s, and alumni brods and LC’s flooded the registration booth and the ballroom
exchanging their greetings, kamay-s, and beso-s. Voting for the next board of
directors were conducted online as the registration is ongoing. The program was
introduced and hosted by Brod Isaac Galang and Ms. Tickle Castro. To start
things off, Brod Eduardo “Nonoy” Garcia lead the opening prayer, followed by the
Betan Hymn by the resident brods, and the opening remarks by Brod Facundo “Ying”
Palafox IV. Next was The Ric Torres Initiative by Brod Ricardo “Ric” Torres; and
the Grand Malmon of the Day, the keynote speaker, Brod Joey Onias.
The resident inductees, Brod Ron Isaiah
Ramos, Brod Gerson Vicro Bantag, Ms. Hannah Faye Cacayorin, and Ms. Athea
Danielle Daep lead the intermission number before the most awaited induction of
the said brods and LC’s. They are then inducted by Brod Glorisimo “Bong”
Pionilla (for the brods), and Ms. Iris Montes (for the LC’s).
The program then proceeded with the
announcement of projects of the residents, by Grand Princep Edson Rick “Ed” San
Juan. A truly remarkable and touching speech indeed; both for the residents and
the alumni brods.
There were alumni brods that were awarded and given appreciation to the different fields they excelled at; these are: Brod Camilo Pancratius Cascolan (Guest Speaker), Brod Michael Aramand “Migs” Canilao (Academe), Brod Ricardo “Ric” Torres (Community Service), Brod Joey Onias (Private Sector), Brod Facundo “Ying” Palafox IV (Public Sector), Brod Dennis Liggayu and Brod Dennis “Denggoy” Belmonte Jr. (Service to the Fraternity), and Brod Mike Samia and Brod Ponce Miguel Lopez (Bar Exam Passers).
UPBBSFAA announced their new set of Board
of Directors, led by the outgoing Grand Princep, Brod Facundo “Ying” Palafox IV.
Brod Eduardo “Nonoy” Garcia was named UPBBSF President; Brod Ricardo “Ric”
Torres, Brod Valentino “Val” Guzman, Brod Facundo “Ying” Palafox IV, Brod Dennis
“Denggoy” Belmonte Jr., Brod Darryl Reyes, and Brod Anton Hipolito are the voted
board members along with Brod Justin Luigi Cruz and Brod Isaac Ern Galang as
special appointees by the board members.
Audio Visual Presentation was made by Brod
Markfil Tersol along with his team, Pixelight Multimedia. A same day edit video
was presented, showing the events from the week that led to the success of the
40th Anniversary Celebration.
To culminate the activity, Brod Eduardo
“Nonoy” Garcia gave the final words for the event and led all the brods present
in reciting the Betan Credo.
Indeed, the events that added up in
celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the UPB Beta Sigma Fraternity, are one for
the books. It could have never been successful without the help of the resident
brods and LC’s, the alumni, and their deep bond. For all that has been done, we
continue the legacy of the brods that stands before us, and create with
ourselves new legacies that can also be one for the stories of history. For all
that the Fraternity is currently facing, shifts of paradigms are needed to
effectively adapt to these circumstances. The love for the fraternity will never
waver, and we shall see the strength in these changing times. Cheers!

does not define you.”
