A Day of Smiles for the Children of the Lower Lourdes Daycare Center

By Anton Hipolito and Jaycee Moraga

In the true spirit of service the Beta Sigma Fraternity has proven that through the changing times it has been able to provide what the society is in need of. It has been addressing the calls from different social issues. In every aspect of the society it could be undoubtedly observed that the Beta Sigma Fraternity has been able to fulfill its true spirit of service. In line with this, the U.P. Baguio Beta Sigma Fraternity has stayed true to this testament.

Last February 21, the fraternity held an outreach program at Lower Lourdes Daycare Center. The outreach program aims to render service to those children who are in need and letting them feel that there are still those who care. The beneficiaries of the Outreach Program are those institutions with the same intentions of the fraternity of providing help to those who are in need that may include those special children from the DREAM Foundation which is the site of the previous Outreach Program.

The Lower Lourdes Daycare Center houses about 25 children of the families of Lower Lourdes Barangay, Baguio City. Families of which have below average income causes their parents to work and with the absence of the parents, the children seek for care and love.

The fraternity acknowledged the problem and gave them a day of laughter and glee. This may sound simple yet the results of our labor prove to be significant for a child’s happiness gives us a sense of fulfillment and joy in our hearts.

The Outreach Program was full of games and prizes that gave smiles to the children. The day started out with a prayer followed by an introduction of each fraternity member. Then a calamansi relay followed. We saw the enthusiasm of the children and despite of their rowdiness, we enjoyed our interaction with them. We gave them food and afterwards held an interactive storytelling in which the children would imitate the sounds of certain animals. A dance-off then followed in which the best dancer will be given a prize. Not knowingly we too joined the dancing and had a blast doing so. After the dancing, we gave the children school supplies and then said our goodbyes.

The social workers too enjoyed the program and were very grateful. Their parents have also been very thankful for such a wonderful effort that the fraternity has given for their children. Overwhelming bliss has taken over us in seeing the children’s delight. In spite of the fact that it has been only a day of happiness, we believe that we made an impact to the children’s lives and we know that this will be an inspiration of the fraternity’s endeavors and would soon be followed by future projects with the same nature.

Cheers Brothers and may we all be in peace and prosperity!

UP Baguio Beta Sigma Fraternity Sponsors Fireworks Display

in UPB’s Golden Jubilee Launching Program
by Anton Hipolito

The University of the Philippines Baguio will be celebrating its golden jubilee this year and to start the yearlong celebration the fraternity was given the chance to be part of commemorating the school’s existence for over 50 years.

Last February 15, the school held the launching program of UP Baguio’s Jubilee Year. The program was a re-enactment of the 50 years the school local history. It was going down memory lane for the Jubilee Celebration committee as they conceptualized as one big theater drama. From the 60’s up to the present time, the program acknowledged UP Baguio’s journey through history as it witnessed countless issues including the rise and fall of the Marcos dictatorship and even the popularity of the mainstream pinoy pop culture.

With this, the committee requested the fraternity to provide a fireworks display as the culmination of the day’s celebration. They believed that we can deliver and provide them the service that they deem necessary for the inauguration. The skies were lit with beautiful sparks and lights from the fireworks as the crowd watched with awe. Booms and explosions of the fireworks were heard not only from the UP Baguio but also from the whole Baguio City which lasted for about 5 to 7 minutes of spectacular display of pyrotechnics.

The UP Beta Sigma Fraternity Baguio chapter would like to express their deepest gratitude to the UP Beta Sigma Fraternity Alumni Association, UPBSF, Inc., UPBSF-International, Inc. and UPBSF NorCal especially to Brother Rey Escano and Brother Joyce Onias. In the true spirit of service, we hope that this undying support would never falter but rather continue to grow for the coming years.

Again, thank you Brothers and God bless us all! Cheers and may we all be in peace and prosperity!
