U.P. BAGUIO BETA SIGMA CELEBRATES 64th ANNIVERSARY
by JR Roque, Grand Princep of UPB-Beta Sigma Fraternity

We residents of the UP Baguio Beta Sigma Fraternity celebrated our 64th Year and 2010: Year of the UP Beta Sigma Fraternity last July 14. The resident members’ celebrations came in two major events:

1. THE ACTIVITY GARDEN (a.k.a. Outdoor Activity Center), a project that was approved and consequently financed by the UP Northern California Chapter under the Project Awards Committee headed by its chairman Brod Gerry Abenes, with some assistance and guidance from Brod Willie “Tatang” Vergara, in his capacity as President of UP Beta Sigma Fraternity International (UPBSFI, Inc.) The simple inauguration of the Garden was attended by UP Baguio Chancellor Priscilla Macansantos, Vice Chancellor Bienvenido Marzan, Fraternity advisers Prof. Candy Torres and Prof. Rina Afable (wife of Brod Yong Afable) and by the residents of UP Beta Sigma Fraternity-Baguio.

2. THE ANNUAL CAKE-GIVING ACTIVITY which has been a tradition of UP Beta Sigma Fraternity-Baguio every national anniversary, was held right after the Garden inauguration.

ACTIVITY GARDEN

As envisioned, this facility is primarily aimed to cater to the contemporary needs of the University and the studentry, specifically (1) as a freshman activity center; (2) a place for exhibits by different campus-based organizations; (3) as an outdoor exhibit area of the Fine Arts students of the College of Arts and Communication; and, (4) a stage for numerous class performances.

This garden was originally planned to be built at the pond area, upon the recommendation of Vice Chancellor for Administration Marzan, UP Baguio Chancellor Macansantos decided to give us another site. The advantage of this new site is that, like the pond area, it is also visible and is even nearer to the buildings and classrooms such as the Library, College of Social Sciences and College of Arts and Communication.

Guided by an architectural plan by Prof. Bob (a landscape architect) that was made available to us for free, we provided all the labor necessary to complete the project. We did this not only to save on costs, but also derived the feeling of satisfaction of being able to build a university landmark through our own physical efforts, just like what the earlier UP Baguio brods did at the pond area after the dreaded 1991 earthquake that destroyed many university facilities and claimed the lives of many people in Baguio.

ANNUAL CAKE GIVING

After the simple program, the residents gave cakes to the faculty of different College departments, other academic staff, and administrative personnel of the university comprising the faculty of the College of Science, College of Arts and communication, College of Social Sciences, Human Kinetics Program, Office of the Chancellor, Office of the Vice Chancellor for Administration and Vice chancellor for Academic Affairs, Office of Student Affairs, Library, Maintenance, and Security Guards . The fraternity is known for this annual celebration of our anniversary because we extend our celebration to the university faculty and administrators.
