OBBF Sportxmas Party Pioneer Highlands and RFM Gymnasium Mandaluyong, RP - December 5, 2009
The Operation Big Brother Foundation of the U.P. Beta Sigma Fraternity in Diliman had its annual Sportsfest and annual Christmas Party last December 5, 2009 - with a twist.
The combined food, drink and sports fest was a whole day event and the brainchild of OBBF VP Membership Leo Robel ‘95 and OBBF President Jason Justo ‘92.
Held at the Pioneer Highlands and RFM Gymnasium, it was a battle of wits, strategy and muscle in OBBF’s traditional Alumni vs. Residents style. Over 20 young and foolish resident Betans matched up against a couple of dozen of aging but still horny alumni in a dramatic see-saw battle. The Christmas merry-making started first with 2 cases of Matador Brandy and 2 cases of San Miguel Beer setting a tone of serious drinking as an opener for the very serious competition.
* No-Limit Texas Holdem Poker
No-Limit Texas Holdem Poker with a PhP four figure sum at stake was the first event, with the residents fielding OBBF Holdem 5 Champion RA Caguioa ’06, and a very able team of composed of Roy Baviera ’07, Arveen Medrano ’08, and boy genius Allan Ibanez ’09. The alumni team was no less star-studded. OBBF Holdem 1 and OBBF Holdem 3 Champions Leo ‘The Wild Thing’ Robel ’95 and Rafael ‘The Fisherman’ Hidalgo ’86 led Jason Justo ’92, Dennis Belmonte ’86 and Jig Reyes ’87 to what seemed to be a fairly matched battle.
No feeling out rounds here: champions Robel ‘95 and Caguioa ‘06 immediately went head to head ALL-IN on the very first f….g hand. The cards were turned up with Leo behind and drawing for his tournament life, but Caguioa’s strong hand held up knocking out Robel and relegating him to making twitter updates on the blow-by-blow of the tournament. But despite the alumni getting an early shellacking, it wasn’t a fairly matched battle as what was originally foreseen. Hidalgo ’86 - The Fisherman went to work reeling ‘em in one by one without regard for friend or foe. In under two hours, Hidalgo decimated the field. Only Reyes ’87 remained and with just a few chips and a chair he conceded leaving Hidalgo 86 champion once again.
* Basketball
With the alumni twice the age of the residents, it did not seem it would be a fair fight. Basketball strategists Lloyd Dizon ’87 and Philip Marfil ’81 for the alumni got to work by identifying the residents’ best players and forcing them to down shot after shot of Matador Brandy before game time. Within an hour one resident was fast asleep.
Come game time at the RFM Gymnasium, the strategy worked with the alumni managing to tie the residents one game a piece. But as the alcohol wore off the residents and alumni legs and lungs got heavier, the inevitable end came in deciding Game 3. The alumni were beaten. The Sportxmas was tied at one event a piece.
* Billiards
Dinner and drinks were served back at the Pioneer Highlands Podium Sports Center, and the games resumed as well. The residents fielded wondertwins Dogs Dogwe ’06 and Capi Capistrano ’06 (the residents aren’t too imaginative with their nicknames, eh?) for the 9-Ball and Joeyboy Alvarez ’06 and Arveen Medrano ’08 for the 8-ball. Billiards heroes in their hey-day the alumni team proved nothing except that they had failing eyes and shaky hands as the toll of hypertension and diabetes sent them crashing and burning in heap of utter defeat. Residents leading 2 events to 1.
* Bowling
The alumni bowling team was depleted. Ollie ‘Mr. Fingers’ Jumao-as ’73 and Nug ‘Mr. Fingerer’ Aquino ’79 were absent along with their 230 averages. In their place was untested Jay ‘Acol’ Policarpio ’88 and first time player Philip ‘Bowlingballhead’ Marfil ’81. It looked like ‘Pete Danao ’92 and Jason Justo ’92 would have to carry the team.
The residents looked serious. Their GP Elmer Reyes ’05 led a team composed of Miel Udtohan ‘05, Dope Cobbarubia ‘05, Lester Palad ‘07, and RA Caguioa ’06.
Policarpio and Marfil rose to the occasion bowling superbly. The residents revealed why they were serious: they didn’t know which fingers belonged in what hole - they were all first time bowlers. The lopsided score did not matter, the residents had a hell of a time, playing way after the event had ended and into the wee hours of the morning. 2 events a piece.
* Darts
Darts would decide the 2009 Champion and with all players heavily under the influence by now, it was anyone’s game. Monching Mamaril ’97 and Sting Salvador ’93 of the alumni took on Joemar Antoerpia ’08 and Allan Ibanez ’09. In a hard fought battle that saw many injuries from wayward darts, the alumni proved to be better coordinated while inebriated taking down the residents on the final bullseye.
The Alumni were the 2009 Champions. What a Christmas Gift! It was sweet revenge for the alumni, who were defeated handily by the residents in the last Summer Games in Subic.
The residents vowed on the chastity of their Ladies Corp to pay the Alumni back 10-fold for the crushing defeat. Betans do hate losing.
