OBBF Hosts Recruitment Seminar
Article by Mon Mamaril

The Operation Big Brother Foundation conducted a 2-part recruitment seminar for the resident Brods last April 26 and May 3, at One Burgundy Plaza, Katipunan. The event was well attended, having no less than the top officers from UP Diliman, UP Baguio, UP Visayas, and UP Mindanao present; with guests speakers Brods Rolly Reyes ‘66, Dennis Belmonte ’86, and Jig Reyes ‘87.

The residents had a full-packed day one, starting off with an opening prayer led by Brod Rod Reyes ’71. The First Vice Grand Princep’s report was done by Brod Posh Diaz ‘13, where it was revealed that recruitment is not a challenge unique to Diliman but shared with the other UP units as well.

Brod Rolly Reyes was the first speaker with the message, “Think inside the box.” He shared that we should approach recruitment by looking at our strengths and how we can showcase this in the University. This was supported by inputs from Brod Prof. Joe Lalas ’69, who mentioned that the resident Brods should be out there to create the overall attractive image of UP Beta Sigma. “We should be able to penetrate different organizations so that the Fraternity can extend out and get people to join us: intellectuals, political parties, campus organizations, varsity teams, etc. We should make the Fraternity interesting and appealing.”

Brod Dennis Belmonte’s part started by assessing the current state of recruitment in UP. From UPD’s negative connotation about the fraternity culture to UPB’s strict parents to UPMin’s being a young university with less familiarity with the fraternity culture to UPV’s low population and low ratio of men to women (not to mention men who also want to become women!), each chapter had their share of the challenges faced in recruiting. This was followed by a few questions like, “What are the factors that convinced us to join the Fraternity in the first place? What are the main selling points that made us decide that UP Beta Sigma is the fraternity of choice? Who are our competitors and how do we fare with these organizations?”  Being a seasoned marketing professional, Brod Dennis approached recruitment similar to selling a business. Identifying the selling points (what’s the value proposition), searching for prospects, and creating marketing strategies were the main points of his talk.

The third speaker was Brod Jig Reyes ‘87 who did a workshop: creating real world scenarios and pushing the residents to think of the solutions themselves. His aim was to focus on branding and create concrete action plans. He steered the discussion towards formulating creative ideas which included converting the tambayan to a wifi spot to attract possible recruits, and even giving out free review sessions for incoming freshmen. During this discussion the residents also looked into tapping our affiliate organizations the UP Sigma Beta, UP Beta Sigma Ladies Corps, and UP Tumbleweeds as recruitment channels. Brod Jig’s idea was that we should not go far from where our foundation was laid: going full circle and promoting UP Beta Sigma as the UP Brotherhood of Scholars. This would somehow make the name more appealing to parents and the students. All of these ideas were processed during day 2, scheduling the action plans and securing the commitment of the residents for new recruits.

This activity indeed was a great opportunity for the residents to hear the thoughts of the alumni Brods on how recruitment was done during their time, how to create a brand for UP Beta Sigma and how to sell it. But most importantly, it was their inputs and commitment to further growing our numbers that were best outputs of this seminar. We look forward to the results of their efforts in the coming months, and hopefully we would be able to at least double our numbers in each campus by the end of the academic year.

Again, we would like to extend our gratitude to the following Brods for lending their time and providing resources to make this activity successful: Brod Rolly Reyes, Brod Rod Reyes, Brod Joe Lalas, Brod Pete Danao, Brod Jig Reyes, Brod Dennis Belmonte, Brod Jay Policarpio, Brod Owl Balmores, Brod Danilo Si, Brod Alex Bermas, Brod Chee Ocampo, Brod Manman Dejeto.

On a lighter note, each session was capped off by a jug-a-lug session at the world famous Rolly’s Autoshop of Brod Alex Bermas ’97. (During this session, I think more ideas came up especially that Sigma Betans were there!)

Cheers!

The Operation Big Brother Foundation (OBBF) hosted a recruitment seminar for the UP Diliman residents on April 26, at UP Beta Sigma Secretariat Office at Burgundy Plaza Tower 2, Katipunan. It was also attended by participants from UP Los Banos, UP Baguio, UP Visayas and UP Mindanao. Facilitators were Brods Mon Mamaril and Alex Bernas. First of a series of seminars for resident brods of the UP system. this engagement is expected to be executable in 2 years as targeted by Brod Jig Reyes.

Aside from being an opportunity to assess our current recruitment process, it is a venue to share experiences on the topic across generations of brods as intimated by Brod Mon Mamaril.

Gracing the event as guest speakers were Brods: UPBSFI Central Pres. Rolly Reyes ‘66, Dennis Belmonte '86 and Jig Reyes ‘87.

Brod Dennis, a marketing expert, discussed marketing tips and strategies than can be utilized while Brod Jig tackled possible branding and content projections on per area basis.

Brod Mon Mamaril: "We are positive that this activity would further increase the confidence of the brods in recruiting new members and hopefully translate to an improvement in our numbers in the coming months".

Our appreciation and gratitude to OBBF Chairman Rafael Hidalgo and the OBBF Executive Committee for making this happen!
