The UP Beta Sigma SOMA Center Gets A Boost from the OBBF

by Raffy Hidalgo

The UP Beta Sigma School of Martial Arts Center (SOMACEN) got a big boost from the renewed support of the OBBF.  Together with the Diliman GP Josh Caringal ’06 and the residents, the OBBF put together a fund raising project for which the SOMACEN was the sole beneficiary.   The project, the Caloy Agulto ’74 Invitational No-Limit Texas Holdem Poker Tournament was held last September 3, 2011 at the Makati Sports Club along Leviste Street in the Makati business district.

With the help of tournament sponsor brod Caloy, OBBF raised P 27,925 for the SOMACEN as it vowed to keep the Center running.

In a meeting on August 23, GP Josh was concerned by the SOMACEN’s imminent closure due to its dwindling fund, especially since the residents actively use the venue- twice a week.   (The SOMACEN is also used for special sessions as well - last August, a 4-hour session with the residents was held with brods Jopet Laraya ’63, Dolph Pinlac ’62, Freddie Fajardo ‘64 and visiting Hong Kong Pakua Grandmaster H.C. Lee).

OBBF President Lloyd Dizon in response gave his commitment to Josh to do all he could to keep the SOMACEN going, and with a handful of brods quickly began working on the first of several fund raising efforts- the poker tournament.

On receipt of the new funds, SOMACEN Director Dennis Belmonte ’86, thanked all who participated in the fund-raiser, as well as recent benefactors of the facility, Brods Brandy Ancheta ’61, Tatang Vergara ’67, Jerry Lacson ’85, Conrad Castillo ’90 and a certain brod who wishes to remain anonymous for the time being. Dennis called on all brods to keep supporting the SOMACEN and help keep the martial arts tradition of the late Brod Johnny Chiuten alive.
