Sacramento

On the last week of April, Beta Sigma titan Eding Hizon of Great Escape ‘63 called to say that he was planning to take a weekend trip from his home in Las Vegas to Sacramento en route to Yosemite, then to Los Angeles to visit his ka-batch, Mando Enrico.

With such short notice, I sent an email to brothers in Sacramento about his arrival. A brief conversation with Fred Aquino resulted in a decision to have lunch with Brod Eding at Mizu, one of Sacramento’s best Japanese buffet restaurants. Those who came to honor him were Brods Fred Aquino '57, Emy Fajardo '57, Johnny Regadio '66 and myself.

While at lunch, Brod Emy Fajardo offered Eding to make a quick visit to his Los Lagos home in Granite Bay, a classy, tightly secured subdivision comprising of about 160 tastefully and specially designed homes in California. Los Lagos has three man-made lakes and is among the few areas in California where wealthy people live. While inside the moving car, Eding kept on clicking his new favorite camera, an Olympus (OM-D). Brod Emy was quick to declare though that he is the "poorest" among the residents.

The brief tour ended at Brod Emy’s home. The main house is owned by Brod Emy’s son and his family is connected via a hallway to the residence of Emy and wife Eppie, although it was designed to make it look like just one house altogether. Many brods and sisters have seen this beautiful home, and visitors outside of California include Dean Ted Topacio, Grandmaster Johnny Chiuten, Mino and Lea Cabral, Anggie Angliongto and Tony Lu (deceased). The landscape includes a beautiful collection of roses and various flowering plants, and a swimming pool with a natural looking waterfalls. The interior is as tasteful as the exterior and Brod Eding grabbed a few shots.

We then proceeded to downtown Sacramento. After enjoying a few sips of Sacramento’s best coffee at the Temple House, we proceeded to the State Capitol. Then to the river bank and river walk of West Sacramento, where we waited for the blue hour. It was then when we found out that neither of us brought our tripods, so we had to make do with high ISO to be able to still perform hand-held shots after sunset. The pictures below are all without tripod.

Yosemite National Park

Eding left Sacramento at noon of Sunday, and stayed at a hotel near the Yosemite Park entrance and took the rest of the afternoon and evening resting after a long drive. To his dismay, however, Eding called in the afternoon of Monday from one of Yosemite's spectacular views - The Tunnel View - and said he was looking at all the fog covering the view. He said he tried to go up higher, towards Glacier Point, but the fog would not let up and all he saw were cars going back to the Valley, apparently because there was nothing to see in this vantage point either. The following day though the weather cleared.

Los Angeles

Eding and Baba spent a couple of days in Los Angeles, specifically to visit his batch mate Mando Enrico who underwent heart surgery early this year. They had dim sum lunch with Mando and Rexie, and Ago Romero. Later, other brods and wives came to join in the reunion capped by dinner at Asian Buffet.  Mando, after some initial setbacks and complications, is recovering almost miraculously well. He is thinking of having a "thanksgiving" party of sorts in the near future. He extends his gratitude to everyone who has kept him in their prayers. Eding pointed out that we, the Betan families, all did it together and that the Healing Mass organized by the Betan resident brods at the Chapel of Holy Sacrifice in UP Diliman on March 4, 2014 was well attended. A couple of pictures taken by UPBSF Central Pres. Brod Rolly Reyes at the Healing Mass are inserted here, as well you can find them at RGR's Photo Albums. -- by NormB.
