The evening of December 1st 2012 in Davao City was just like any other Davao City evening—dry, warm, and dusty; with patches of clouds dyed orange by the city’s street lights. But what makes this night more memorable than the others happened in the function room of Buffet Palace where the stuff of Legends unfolded before the attendees’ very eyes.
The University of the Philippines Beta Sigma Fraternity Alumni Association (UPBSFAA) - SOUTHERN MINDANAO CHAPTER INC. INDUCTION BALL / CHRISTMAS PARTY started innocent enough. Brods and Sisses were lining up to a table outside the function room, filling the registration sheet with their names, batch year, contact numbers and their e-mail addresses. For the majority who did not organize the event, they never knew what was in store for them. For those who did organize the event, one can only imagine the excitement that the organizers were experiencing as the event progressed to the Induction of Officers and the granting of the Special Awards to our Most Distinguished Fraternity Brothers.

The event culminated in Brod Solomon “Mon” T. Carpio’s conferral of GAWAD ULIRANG AGILA to Brod Sebastian L. Angliongto. GAWAD ULIRANG AGILA, in the words of Brod Mon, is “the most momentous and meaningful award that the UPBSFAA-Southern Mindanao Chapter can bestow to a Betan… the Agila or Eagle, is emblematical of strength, prestige, spirit, vision, wisdom, loyalty and integrity... Tonight’s Gawad Ulirang Agila awardee is among the Betans who have done noble deeds and achieved great milestones through his accumulated learning and visionary leadership that brought honour, prestige and reputable stature not just to himself and his family but also to the name of our dear Fraternity. He is among the honourable brothers who took Beta Sigma’s high banners far and wide. ” Truth be told, Brod Angie was already a legend among the fraternity and the Davao City community as well. The Gawad Ulirang Agila award was just icing on the cake.

The night’s pièce de résistance was when Founder Melecio “Rico” A. Arranz, Jr. walked up to the stage and delivered a moving, emotional and inspirational speech. Brod Rico Arranz may be 86 years of age but he nevertheless graced the UPBSFAA Southern Mindanao Chapter Induction Ball and Christmas Party. Brod Rico told the attendees that when the Second World War ended, there was a great need in rebuilding the country. He joined the first post war fraternity in the University of the Philippines - the Beta Sigma Fraternity. After Brod Rico had finished his speech, the whole room gave him a standing ovation and a thundering applause.
"The Legend"
One can only stand in awe and profound appreciation when you are in a room among living legends. These Betans are the living embodiments of the Betan Credo. These Betans are the stuff of Legends.
