It was another fruitful 2012-2013 school year for our resident brothers in the Los Baños campus.

Last August 2012, the chapter celebrated its 62nd anniversary, beginning with a mass on the morning of our founding date, August 13. The brods then rallied back to the Coop tambayan and had a jug-a-lug. By noon, a number of elders joined the fest, sharing stories with the residents. From August 14 to 16, an exhibit was held at the lobby of the College of Arts and Sciences annex II building showing the history of our beloved fraternity, notable brods from their respective fields, School of Martial Arts, and past activities. This was an effective way to showcase to the UPLB community what it is to be a Beta Sigman.

Friday, August 17, was the campus day celebration at the Coop tambayan, a joint event with the Sigma Betans. Roses were given to the charming and beautiful women (students, faculties and professors) of the campus. By noon, a luncheon was shared by the resident and elder brods and sisters with various UPLB faculty and personnel. What else but a grand jug-a-lug afterwards. It was a day of laughter, memories reminisced and endless bottles of beer. Those who were still standing proceeded to the IC’s bar for the after party. Overall, the celebration was successful in creating a stronger bond among the brods, residents or elders and developing a good camaraderie with the UPLB community.

GP Raymond Juan’08e, 1VGP Paolo Hernandez’08d and 2VGP Karl Joseph Carreon’09b attended the GP summit in Davao from Nov. 29 to Dec. 2. Hosted by the UP Mindanao chapter they were joined by key resident officers of UP Diliman, UP Baguio, and UP Visayas. The summit proper was on the 2nd day and a frat ball was held the 3rd day. Together with some elder brods they discussed the initiation process, standardization of some doctrines and traditions and proposed changes to the constitution.

Operation Big Brother, now on its 39th year, was held on December 15, 2012 at the covered court of Maquiling School. The resident brods spent the whole day with less fortunate children sharing the spirit of Christmas playing games, giving gifts and eating hearty meals. In preparation for this activity the residents themselves printed at least 200 shirts, wrapped gifts and prizes and cooked food for the big day ahead. Clowns were hired that had the children laughing at their antics and amazed with their magic tricks.

A leadership training seminar was held last February 9 at Tahanan ng Ama in Putho-Tuntungin. With elders Brod Jim Labastilla’92b and Brod Jonas Tetangco’93a as speakers, they discussed ways and means to improve recruitment.

Last February 15, 2013, on the Friday of the February Fair, the chapter spearheaded Battle Royale -- Laguna’s largest amateur mix martial arts competition, as a crowd of more than 800 fight fans flocked to the Baker Hall to witness 8 fast-paced fights. Two of the fighters were Chav Alo UPD‘06c and Eleo Edquilag’11fF. Brod Chav provided most of the highlights of the night with his accurate striking skills and impressive wrestling game. Brod Chav dominated his opponent for most of the time, throwing quick hands and completing takedowns before defeating his opponent by TKO late in the very first round. On the other hand, Brod Eleo’s opponent was the better fighter that night, winning by TKO early in the second round, although Brod Eleo landed crisp punches multiple times that seemed to rock his opponent. The better conditioning and reach advantage got the better of Brod Eleo. Overall, the activity was a huge success, bringing the sport of mix martial arts a step closer to UP Los Baños.

Of course, one thing the residents never forget to do is to honor to our graduating brods, namely, Froilan Jay Menguito’09b, Antipas Criador V’06f and Felizardo Almares III’06f who got their undergraduate degrees in BS Forestry, BS Agriculture and BS Agribusiness Management, respectively, while Olympus Laforteza’02a and Joel Flores’12e received their master’s degree in business. The night before graduation day of April 27, 2013, a testimonial dinner was held along with the Sigma Betans and their graduates at Splash Mountain Resort. It was a night of festivities and feasting.

The guest speaker for the night, Brod Roger Barroga’83a, talked about his days as a resident as well as a professional inspiring the brods and sisters, whether graduating or not. Afterwards, tributes to the graduating brods and sisters were given by a close sister or brod, then a member of their family. Finally the graduates gave their own comments, expressing their experiences as a resident member, what they learned as well as how the remaining resident members should learn. The program ended with the graduate being inducted into the alumni association.
