Big Brothers' Bounty AY2013-14 1st Semester
Regular Scholars and Special Grantees
by Dutch Aragones
Here are the 4 regular BBB scholars
for this 1st semester (pls. refer to attached photos, with Nick Angel
handing out the PhP13,000-grant for each recipient):
1) Reynold Rodriguez '11b (BS
Chemistry)
2) Mark Mantuano '10d (BS Agriculture)
3) Jonel Battung '10a (BS Civil Engineering)
4) Paolo Cabangon '11c (BS Ag Economics)
This is a sample of letter they received --
Congratulations, Brod Reynold
Rodriguez! You have been selected as recipient of Big Brothers' Bounty
Scholarship Grant, effective 1st sem AY2013-2014. Brod Nick Angel'81, BBB
peso fund treasurer, will contact you and give your PhP13000, hopefully
before the end of August.
The BBB project is made possible through the commitment from more than a
hundred elder brothers from all eras, from all over the world. Please see
attached file for the list of BBB donors.
You must pass all your registered subjects for you to continuously get
this grant. You must be able to recruit a new brod within this school
year. At the end of this semester kindly notify Brod Jojo Alejar, BBB
campus coordinator and me on your academic status. If at any time within
the semester you find it difficult to fulfill any of these obligations,
please get in touch with the GP, Jojo or Nick to help you out.
Don't let this good fortune turn to waste. Make sure you fulfill your
responsibilities as a BBB scholar. Stay focused in your studies without
sacrificing your duties to your family and to our Fraternity.
Cheers!

The following resident brods have
been selected as special grantees, courtesy of anonymous elders, who chose the Big Brothers' Bounty program to facilitate
their scholarship grants:
1) Carlo De Laza UPD'10e -
recipient of Naniong, Santiago, Banez Scholarship Grant;
exclusive for a resident
majoring in Fine Arts; in the photo, Carlo is flanked
by Brods Jerico Gascon and
Kelmer Resuelo, both former BBB scholars.
2) GP Joshua Malana UPLB'08f - recipient of UP Northern California
Beta Sigma
Special BBB Grant; shown here
receiving his grant from Tomsac Criador'81.
3) Fergus Alastra UPD'06b - recipient of UP Southern California
Beta Sigma
Special BBB Grant; shown here
receiving his grant from Tomsac Criador'81.
4) Miko Maki UPLB'13a - recipient of Dean Ted Topacio Special
Grant; exclusive for
a resident majoring in Vet Med;
shown here receiving his grant from Tomsac Criador'81.
All 4 got PhP13,000. Same as BBB, all they need to do is pass their
subjects and recruit new residents.
Cheers to BBB! Cheers to UP Beta Sigma!!!

Ten Years of Big Brothers’ Bounty
by Dutch Aragones
The Beginning
In 2003, I mobilized some Los Baños elder brods based in North America to
support the residents stage production “Katas ng Dubai”. Philip
Balagot’00c was GP and star of the play. Seventeen brods gladly responded
to come up with a one-page ad, Katas ng Amerika. From the collection there
was an excess $64 so a plan was hatched –
Why not use this as seed money to start another project?
How can the elders in America help in recruitment?
What incentives can we offer residents who can recruit?
The plan was simple --
GP and Body select the deserving brods.
Benefactors award $200/semester/recipient.
Recipient must recruit a brod within 2 semesters.
Recipient must pass all subjects; High average grade is not required.
This incentive program is our commitment to make our Fraternity truly a
Brotherhood of Scholars. It is also through this that parents of the
residents may have a good impression of the UPLB Beta Sigma Fraternity.
(Soon enough the parents of Mark Balane'06a told him that if he is to join
an org, he should go with Beta Sigma as it is giving scholarships to its
members.)
Twelve brods initially signed up to get the project going:
-- Vee De Vera’67b
-- Ronnie Dimaano’80b
-- Bob Lorenzo’78b
-- Olrac Malabanan’77c
-- Mark Nubla’79d
-- Val Palattao’72a
-- Pipoy Perez’94b
-- Bong Sabalvoro’80a
-- Erwin Salud’82e
-- Johnny Singh’68b
-- Ernie Tremor’58
-- William Valdez’81c
All committed to donate $20/sem to sustain this reward system on a long
term basis. (In due time donation was increased to $25/sem and incentives
gradually progressed from $250 to $300 and now set at PhP13000.)
The project was launched in the 2nd semester of AY 2003-2004. Eric
Catangay‘02c (BS Applied Math from Bataan) was the first recipient (see
first photo). In 2004 BBB boosters more than doubled as Vet Med brods
signed up. Brods from Australia and Switzerland joined in 2005. By 2006
Philippine-based brods were part of the project, paving the way for more
residents to avail of this opportunity.

As a testament to BBB’s relevance and success, there are already several
BBB recipients who have graduated from UPLB. They in turn have pledged
their own time and effort to become full time donor members, thus giving
back and sharing fruits of their success with the same institution that
has helped them achieve their academic goals.
We cannot totally claim that the boost in resident membership was due to
BBB. But we can be certain that BBB has done a lot to keep the residents
afloat. And for every recipient we helped graduate, it’s something to be
proud of! A round of applause to ALL OF US! Cheers to BBB! Cheers to UP
Beta Sigma!!!
At this time I would like to commend the originals - Vee De Vera’67b, Bob
Lorenzo’78b, Val Palattao’72a, Johnny Singh’68b, and Ernie Tremor’58 for
their unending commitment to this project.
Many thanks to Ted Quijano’67 for advancing his dues until 2016, for Ned
Leonor’79 until 2017 and Dindo Rivera’60 for contributing until 2025!
Active boosters may become few and funds may dwindle, but rest assured
that BBB will be there to honor your trust - be it down to one recipient.
And lastly to the anonymous donor brods – thanks for choosing BBB to
channel your generosity in support of this noble cause.
Helping is SIMPLE and AFFORDABLE
Yet, results are ENDEARING and NOBLE
Our LITTLE way, with BIG hearts we'll see
UP BETA SIGMA's flame burn eternally…
