History is
bequeathed
by: Gabby Moraleda
The year was 1966. Barely a year in office,
Ferdinand Marcos, a UP Alumni, was the Philippine President and Beta Sigmans
occupied the limelight in campus, managing the the prestigious student
publication - The Philippine Collegian. In each issue were carefully crafted
articles embodying the collective hopes, aspirations, artistic expressions,
accounts and narrations of events that filled student life — from debating
contests, student government, sports and academic achievements. In its editorial
columns, the paper became literally the birthplace, a repository of creative
ideas/ beliefs/concepts that were uploaded and found its way into desk of
leaders of government and captains of industry.
Overall, they represented precious works of young, gifted and talented minds —
many are now mainstream columnists. Their articles were written to inspire
students and a young republic in search of its identity — and Beta Sigmans were
at the center of it all. Three brods became Editors-in-Chief then — Bar
Topnotcher Atty. Lito Imperio, Augustin “Toti” Que PhD and Former Ambassador
Jaime Yambao.
It is a crowning achievement for our Brotherhood.
To capture and showcase this legacy, brod Gilbert Dulay ‘64 BSBA CPA, former
Asec of the Ministry of Human Settlements (MHS) during FL Imelda Marcos time,
meticulously, diligently, compiled, and preserved the copies of AY 1966-67 — as
if his efforts were destined for such a special purpose. The request for such a
donation was initiated by brod Butch Madarang, board member UPAA meant to
celebrate the 100th year of the Philippine Collegian this 2023. These precious
copies will be digitized and made available for future Iskolars-ng-Bayan to
dissect and learn from.
Coordinated by International President/Brod JJ Jayme and the meeting arranged by
Brod Nonoy Tagarao, these memorable copies were turned over today May 16 to UP
President Angelo Jimenez and Philippine Collegian Editor-in-Chief Daniel
Sebastianne Daiz, a BS Physics major. The Beta Sigma delegation was led by
former Collegian staffers — Brod/Former DENR Sec Victor Ramos, Ambassador Jaime
Yambao, Augustin “Toti” Que PhD and distinguished brods namely Former House
Deputy Speaker Mat Defensor, MGen Mel Rosales, Central President Ivan Fojas and
GP Diliman Vaughn Cruz.
History is bequeathed.
A lasting gift from Beta Sigma, a meaningful expression of the virtues we stand
for — excellence, truth and nobility.
Beta Sigma Beloved.
