by Lee Lemuel Dela Torre'97
The Rabies Awareness Month of March once again ends with a safer Quezon
City against rabies with the relaunch of the UP Beta Sigma Fraternity’s Oplan
Alis Rabies held on the 17th and 24th of March 2018. This year’s Oplan Alis
Rabies has successfully made a total of 1200 cats and dogs rabies-free.
Vaccination was conducted at te following areas: Brgy. UP Campus Barangay Hall,
Village B covered court, Pook Dagohoy covered court, Pook Libis covered court,
beside the Area 2 tennis court, Pook Palaris Ugnayan Center, Pook Arboretum
Block 1, and Pook Aguinaldo. This was done with the help of the UP Beta Sigma
Ladies Corps, Beta Sigma Fraternity Quezon City Assembly, University of the
Philippines, Teodulo M. Topacio, Jr. Foundation Inc., UP College of Veterinary
Medicine, Department of Agriculture – Bureau of Animal Industry, Rotary Club of
Quezon City Circle, and the Society for the Advancement of Veterinary Research
and Education.
The vaccination program which has been a yearly endeavor of the fraternity was
initiated by Brod Dr. Teodulo M. Topacio, Jr., chairperson of the Teodulo M.
Topacio, Jr. Foundation Inc. The program was proposed in response to the growing
number of rabies cases in the country and regarding reports of rabies-caused
deaths in communities surrounding the UP Diliman campus. Still, the problem of
rabies is far from being eradicated and continues to be a threat to communities
throughout the country. With this in mind, UP Beta Sigma Fraternity shall
continue its efforts to eliminate the threat of rabies in the years to come.
