COMELEC Chair Alfred “Nong Fred” Aquino declared Brod Noli Hina Nolasco UPD ’62b
President of the UP Beta Sigma International (UPBSI) following a unanimous vote
by the newly elected Board of Directors. Brod Noli, who held the post of Acting
President from October 2015 to February 2016, stepped down last March in order
to give way to the Organizing Committee headed by Chairman Edsel Arceo. With
this recent election, he will be heading the UPBSI for the next two years and is
expected to be formally inducted during the UPBSI-sponsored dinner on July 15,
2016 as part of the Platinum celebrations in the Philippines.
After his brief 5-month tenure as Acting President, Brod Noli had the following
to report:
“The time has come for me to turn over the reins of the organization to the
Chairman of the Organizing Council as we embark on a new future. For me, my
stint as your Interim President at the most trying times was a humbling and
learning experience.
To maintain our momentum, I requested for volunteers for an Organizing Council
of our UP Beta Sigma-International. Several volunteers turned up and chose a
Chairman. The Council will tackle the remaining work such as a new Constitution
and Bylaws, Election Process and forthcoming leadership transition, further
improvements in the financial systems and controls, Platinum celebrations,
membership campaign, and so on.
Following are some of the things that happened since I took over as Interim
President last October and which the Organizing Council can build upon:
1. The BOD resolution to dissolve the UPBSFI, Inc. in order to avoid annual
expenses of $1,000 has been approved. Many thanks to Dr. Alfred "Nong Fred"
Aquino.
2. The BOD resolution to transform our organization to a tax-free association
has also been approved. Nong Fred was also mainly responsible for getting this
approved. Our new registered name is now "UP Beta Sigma International" - without
the "Fraternity" and the "Inc."
3. As a result of #2 above, we have reduced annual dues, as follows:
a. For the Philippines - from P1,000 per annum to only P500 per annum
b. Outside of the Phil - from $25 per annum to only $15 per annum
4. Our campaign for membership has been very encouraging. Our US Treasurer Brod
Roy Antonio and Philippine Treasurer Raffy Hidalgo report that many brods have
paid MULTI-YEAR membership dues led by Brod Secretary Voltaire Gazmin, Brod
ex-Secretary Victor Ramos, former Central President Rolly Reyes, Central
President Jojo Alejar and many others. Number of paid members as of February
2016 (in just two months) clearly exceeds the total of paid members for the
whole year of 2015.
5. We made some improvements in our financial control system with Memorandum
Order #2 issued last October. The Organizing Council can still improve on this.
With this Order, please anticipate Treasurers First Quarter Reports from Brods
Roy Antonio and Raffy Hidalgo during the first week of the month.
6. Courtesy of Brod Edwin Acuna, update of the International Directory has been
revived.
7. As a STAUNCH PARTNER OF UP BETA SIGMA CENTRAL, UPBS-International through the
donations of many individual members have contributed to the upcoming Platinum
Anniversary celebrations, and not a single cent came from our membership
payments. These are the following:
a. A Joint Central-International Platinum Anniversary Scholarship Award
($1,200).
b. Sponsorship of the after-golf tournament DINNER on July 15. Everyone is
invited.
c. Sponsorship of attendance of many resident brods to the fratball on July 16.
The Central BOT will determine the names of these brods.
d. Sponsorship of the back cover page of the Platinum Souvenir Program
e. Donation of the grand trophy to the winner of the Central-International Golf
Tournament
f. Tito de Santos Medical Mission on July 14 (in partnership with major sponsor
UP Southern California Chapter, UPBS-International and UPBS-Central).
8. A new, kinder and gentler International googlegroup has been set up by Brod
Dan Galoso. The new name of our googlegroup is
"up-beta-sigma-international@googlegroups.com". Only the ACTIVE MEMBERS (paid in
2015 and/or any future years) are included in this group.
I want to thank many brods who have been part of the things we had been able to
do these past months, including those who have sent me words of encouragement
during our most trying times.”

Brod Noli Nolasco, DVM’73 UP Diliman, is Batch 62B “Diamond-Special”. He
migrated to Canada in 1983, and has a string of accomplishments as a corporate
manager, community leader and as a martial arts expert. The most notable are the
