UP Manila Revival Project

Ready to take off.

After several years of rigorous planning and concerted efforts, we can finally say: We’re ready to take off.

The UP Manila Revival project has always one of the pipe dreams of the UP Beta Sigma Fraternity ever since we faded from the campus scene in Padre Faura sometime in the 80’s. This is one project close to the heart of my brods, especially those who spent most of their college days in UP Manila.

The goal of reviving the Fraternity has always been one of the items in many a Fraternity meeting. Over the years, many efforts were made to resurrect the presence of the Fraternity in UP Manila. Many brods have given their time, strength, and funds for the cause. There were times when the efforts were successful, the most recent of which was the recruitment of two UP Manila students, Miks Paredes (son of Joel Paredes) and Feg Alastra, in 2006.

However, for one reason or another, the efforts did not result to a continued and strong presence of the Fraternity in Padre Faura. The critical mass of resident brods in the campus needed to assure our growth was not achieved.

Sometime 2007, through the leadership of Brod Butch Madarang and several U.P. Manila alumni, the U.P. Manila Beta Sigma Chapter - JRJ Foundation was created and registered with the SEC. On August 9, 2008, using funds of the JRJ Foundation, donated by the Jesus R. Jayme family, the Fraternity erected the UP Manila Gateway, where our seal is proudly emblazoned. The gateway is a solid reminder of our commitment to revive the Fraternity in the place where it originated. Likewise, it ushers the campus into a new era: the era of the UP Beta Sigma Fraternity.

Since the inauguration of the gateway, Jayjay Jayme, Butch Madarang, and several other brods have been meeting with the UP Manila administration, mainly through UPM-CAS Assoc. Dean Jo del Mundo to discuss plans, directions, and strategies for recruiting in UP Manila. The situation was reviewed. Several suggestions were forwarded. Everything was scrutinized. Some aspects were rejected; others were upheld.

This summer term, four UP Diliman resident brods will cross-enroll to UP Manila. They are:

Aldrin Briones ‘10
Allan Ibanez ‘09
Errol Topacio ‘09
Kiko Yuzon ‘09

These brods are tasked scout for potential brods, touch base and recruit the said students, and initiate them into the Fraternity. A number of potential recruits have already been identified from the personal contacts of the brods and the list of incoming College of Arts and Sciences sophomore students given by Assoc. Dean del Mundo. The registration fees and allowances of the brods will be shouldered by Brod Jayjay Jayme.

The cross-enrollees will quarter in the area so they can blend better with the studentry. The cost of board and lodging will likewise be shouldered by Jayjay.

During the summer, the Fraternity may also sponsor activities in the campus to boost its presence. Assoc. Dean del Mundo has suggested several activities which are relevant and attractive in UP Manila.

Once the brods have identified and personally got in touch with their target recruits, an orientation will be organized where the potential recruits will be formally introduced to the Fraternity. Alumni brods will be invited to give their testimonials for the Fraternity. The students who signify their intent to join the Fraternity will be screened and if they pass, will undergo initiation.

The proponents of this endeavor and the cross-enrollees will continuously meet during the summer to assess the situation and fine-tune the recruitment strategy.

However, having new brods at UP Manila by the end of the summer term is not the end-goal of this project. In fact, it is just the beginning. The seeds that will be planted in UP Manila will have to be nurtured. The effort must be sustained until the brods in UP Manila are capable of standing on their own.

It would not be possible for the UP Manila Revival Project to reach its take-off point if not for the steadfast commitment of the Fraternity and the generous help of the UP Manila administration. Thanks are in order for all the brods who attended the meetings and chipped in their thoughts: Founder Brod Rico Arranz, Brod Rolly Reyes, Brod Joel Paredes, Brod Joey Zulueta, and the resident brods. Special acknowledgement should be given to Brod Jayjay Jayme for spearheading the project, and to Brod Butch Madarang and Assoc Dean Jo del Mundo for religiously attending all meetings.

It is not too late for other brods to be involved in this endeavor. The groundwork has been laid but there is still much work to be done. We invite all brods, especially those from UP Manila, those who hold UP Manila close to their heart, and those who desire to see the day when the UP Beta Sigma Fraternity will again walk proudly along the halls of the campus where our beloved Fraternity began, to take part in this undertaking.

Together, we can, and we will, reclaim what is ours.

For a stronger UP Beta Sigma Fraternity I remain,

Prince Elmer A. Reyes
