*Update 1: Tree Planting Project

July 15, 2012

Dear Brothers,

Happy 66th birthday to UP Beta Sigma Fraternity!!

We are proud and happy to announce a very successful celebration of our 66 years founding anniversary. There were three major events that highlighted our celebration:

1. A three-day SOMA (School of Martial Arts) exhibition at UP Diliman (UP gym) attended by resident brods of Diliman, and Los Baņos led by Brods Master Jopet Laraya, Ollie Jumao-as, Freddie Fajardo with bagua Master Patrick Lee as guest. They were joined by Black Secrets brods from Naga City. (Additional details/photos) will be furnished by Brod Ollie)

2. "Alay ng Kapatiran sa Inang Kalikasan" - launching of a nationwide (simultaneously) tree planting project (NGP or National Greening Program) spearheaded by Secs. Mon Paje and Procy Alcala) assisted by ALL Betans nationwide. (Additional details will be provided by Brod Butch Madarang)

3. "Astig @ 66" Grand Fraternity Ball held at the Manila Hotel Rigodon Ballroom. (Details forthcoming from Brods Cris Michelena and event host Willie Nep)

A very sad news: Fortunato de Rueda, older brother of President Rene de Rueda, passed away two days ago. Let's pause for a prayer for him. Nakikiramay po kaming lahat brod kabayan Rene.

Here's the first batch of photos on the tree planting activity in the morning of July 14, 2012. Brod Joel Paredes will upload more photos.

Thank you for all the support!

Salamat po.

*Update 2: Martial Arts Show

From as early as 1960, the fraternity's vaunted skill in martial arts has been widely recognized in the campus. Beta Sigmans studied in the fraternity's School of Martial Arts (SOMA). Brod Johnny Chiuten supervised and took over the leadership of the UP Beta Sigma Kung-Fu Karate Klan. Johnny studied kung-fu under the legendary master, Lao Kim. Through the years, Johnny has developed his own brand of martial art, a style he developed as a result of his extensive training in aikido, karate, arnis, and different Chinese Kung-Fu styles-Hung-gar, Tai Chi, Dragon-Tiger, and Praying Mantis.

To date, the art and craft of Johnny Chiuten continure to live in the fraternity. The martial arts system is now called the Johnny Chiuten Pronus-Supinus School of Martial Arts, or JCPS_SOMA for short.

The practice of martial arts in the UP Beta Sigma Fraternity instills among its members the values of restraint, patience, perseverance, and discipline. Further, the training aims to impart self defense skills, good health and longevity, as well as the ethical philosophy that is the foundation of the Oriental martial arts.
