Heavyweights in the New Mother Chapter Leadership

There must be some coincidence here. The top two elected leaders of our Mother Chapter are both RR’s. They were both tried and tested executives in most difficult assignments in the Philippine government. The two RR’s have both been Department Undersecretaries. Both have the same traits of humility and high need for achievement. And they are both “heavyweights” – physically and figuratively. They are also backed up by a new set of officers and a new Board of Trustees who are also “heavyweights” in their own right.

Below is fellow-forester Brod Johnny Regadio’s message to President Rene on his recent election:

“Congratulations to Brod Rene de Rueda for winning the trust and confidence of our alumni brods and for accepting the call to lead the UPBSFI. I am deeply humbled as your forestry and Catholic brother for the honor that you have brought to our forestry brods and I can always vouch for your unquestionable character, integrity, honesty, dedication and compassion. You have been always looked up to as the "godfather" of our forestry brods because of your personal care and concern about their well-being, and that also includes me.

“I have no doubt that with your able leadership you will continue that same fatherly care and concern to the UPBSFI so that it can continue its role as the “mother” of all Betan chapters, in accordance with its Constitution and By-Laws.

“I have high regard in your capability of managing the organization in a holistic approach, you being a former Undersecretary of DENR, current President of the Society of Filipino Foresters, Inc., and Cluster Head of the Couples for Christ. I believe you will not fail our expectations because I know that you have the faith, humility and obedience to overcome any situation at your hand. Besides, you once said that “failure is not an option” when you accepted the task of managing the Centennial Forest in U.P. Visayas with the support of the UPBSF International.

“I am also confident of the wholehearted support of the BOD, especially with my kabatch working with you. His election as the Vice-President of the UPBSFI is already an indication of the success of your programs and projects.”

As for Vice President Rolly, Tatang has these to say:

“Rolly Reyes, married and a father of two girls is undoubtedly a gift from above. From my perspective, with Founder Rico Arranz behind him, he provided the needed spark, passion for excellence, dedication, reform-mindedness, creativity and organizational skills in harnessing the frat’s most valuable assets to keep the Mother Chapter engine moving effectively and efficiently. For the past year, he was able to do a lot of things with so many other brods through his headship of the Convenor Group that made 2010: The Year of the UP Beta Sigma Fraternity a big success.

“Tested in the corporate jungle of the private sector (ABS-CBN) for at least a decade and a half, he created and directed the following programs: TV Patrol, The World Tonight, Inside Story, Hoy Gising, Balitang K, Papal Visit, etc. He would later go up the ranks until he became Vice President/Chief Operating Officer/Program Director.

“For 3 years in early 2000, he accepted the job as Undersecretary of the Department of Tourism for Marketing and Promotions. Here, he was Team Head of “WOW Philippines”, head of the Bureau of International Tourism Promotion and Bureau of Domestic Tourism Promotion. He was later appointed as Undersecretary for Broadcast, Deputy Chief of the Government Mass Media Group - Channel 4, Channel 9, Channel 13, Philippine Information Agency, Phil Broadcasting Service, Bureau of Communication Services, and Philippine News Agency.

“Towards the end of his stint in government, he became member of the Presidential Communication Group, Special Ops, and Chairman and President of People Television Network, Inc.”

The two RRs are backed up by two frat pillars in Cris Michelena, an advertising executive, as Secretary and lawyer Ron Justo as Treasurer.

The other elected members of the Board of Trustees are: Ying Palafox, Willie Nepomuceno, Joel Paredes, Nugget Aquino, Jojo Alejar, Rupert Ambil, Vic Valdepenas, Jun Galinato, Buddy Quililan and Ick Angeles.
