From Wally Kison, UPLB'74:

Brod ANTONIO 'KILAY' ASUNCION '57 and wife, Sis PERLA CALIZO-ASUNCION '58, both passed away early Monday morning, May 19.  Their bodies lay in state at their house in Lian, Batangas and funeral will be on Sat, May 24.   Check email below from Brod Freddy Fajardo.  Let us all pray for their eternal peace.  Please pass.

From Freddie Fajardo, UPLB'64:

As relayed by Millet, their eldest daughter, sometime during the Holy Week Perla suffered her first heart attack.  She was rushed to the hospital in Lian and was revived within 40 minutes. Just like Kilay, Perla was a heavy smoker.  The doctor advised Perla to give up smoking, but she didn't.

Death came to the couple early morning of May 18.  They died of heart attack one after the other.  Unfortunately, all their househelp were not around during that night as they gave permission to them to go to the fiesta in the next barangay.  It is well known in the household that Kilay kept on saying that "Pag nawala si Perla, hindi ko makakayanan."  How ironic, that their love to each other, even death could not take them apart.

Among the early brods and sis' who went to their wake were: Sflod and Joji Revilleza, Max Maligalig, Boots Revilleza, Grace Criador, Minia Quilloy Arcelo, Lorna Domingo, Letty Fuentes, Cely dela Paz, Josie Saddul, Jimmy Lagdameo, Norms Fajardo, and myself.

Kilay and Perla were buried May 24, a day after Kilay would have celebrated his 68th birthday.  May their souls rest in peace.

From Anggie Angliongto, UPLB'57:

Hi Brod Freddy!  Thank you for all the details of the death of Brod Kilay and Sis Perla!  It is indeed a sad news but a beautiful death being together up to the last moment!  I had not seen them since I graduated ahead of them in 1959.  Though Kilay was my batchmate '57.  May their SOULS rest in Peace!!

From Manolo Banzon, UPLB'68:

Indeed a very sad day for us.  I remember Brod Kilay during our resident days.  A very accommodating brod who unselfishly offered his farm for initiations venues, weekend rendezvous and what have you.

The bahay kubo was newly constructed then, there was no electricity. On a fullmoon moonlight we would walk around the farm with the moonbeam as our only source of light.  It was an awesome scenery.  The many cockfighting trips at Nasugbu and Balayan where he would take us aboard his AC jeep.  The many tales of "aswangs" that circulated nevertheless made our trip to the farm very enjoyable and exciting.

He was our benefactor, a man known in his side of the world.  He would join us in Matabungkay Beach, bringing food and share us his stories.  There was no dull moment with him.  He was fun to be with.  I felt secure every time I visited him.  "Kils" with his "signature tsinelas", his towering height and Batangueno accent made him a real celebrity and a person of interest.  He was real character in the real sense.

In one of my trips to his farm, he brought us to their ancestral house in Balayan.  It was the town fiesta. The house was huge, built ages ago.  He introduced us to her mother who lovingly made pagalit to him.  It was a mother's way of showing love.  Ate Pearl was the the other side of Kils.  She was very happy to see us.  It made the farm alive.  She took care of all our needs, made sure we ate 4 times a day.  Made sure everything was run efficiently.  With the many brods that would converge at the farm, it would be a real disaster if there was no order.

It is a great pain in my heart to lose another brod who has been good to me.  A brod who shared his resources with love and compassion unselfishly.  A brod who went out of his way to share.  And to Ate Pearl a sis and an "ate" who will always be in my heart, and in our hearts.

From Ernie Tremor, UPLB'58:

Brod Kilay and Sis Perla were both dear to me.  I knew them both and we did enjoy the many jam sessions at UPLB.  Too bad, after college I never saw them again.  They are now together and I am sure they will enjoy each other for eternity.

From Vee de Vera, UPLB'67:

Brod Kilay and Sis Perla were the ultimate hosts to so many memorable Beta Sigma/Sigma Beta happenings in their farm in Humayingan, Lian, Batangas.  Brods and sis from Los Banos and Diliman had tasted the loving hospitality of this wonderful couple.

We will all surely miss them and their bondage to the brods and sis which they maintained for so long even after their college days.  To Brod Kilay, the down to earth brod, and Sis Perla, the wonderful host, you will forever be remembered for the times you shared with us.

May your souls rest in peace.

*Some of the memorable fun moments with  the late Brod Kilay Asuncion, UPLB'57...
We were all drunk, high, happy patrolling the San Antonio Farms with the late Brod Kilay and some brods in the middle of a full lit night when we stumbled upon a herd of goats munching on long plots of "kangkong" planted along a small creekside on the farm.  Brod Kilay, the ever funny dramatic down to earth man that he was, pulled out his super long flashlight, beamed the light on the goats and said... "Tingnan ninyo brods, malulusog ang aking mga kambing dahil ang pagkain nila ay kangkong."

Then I said... "gnokgnak pagkain ng gnebmak".

The late Brod Kilay, glassy-eyed, looked at me for a second then burst into an uncontrollable laughter and we all cracked up under the full moon repeatedly uttering the words - "gnokgnak pagkain ng gnebmak...".  Then we lit a joint and walked back home.
The following night, we went crabbing at Matabungcay Beach.  Many years would pass and Brod Kilay and Sis Perla would be hosting more for people and friends.  They had mastered the art of hosting.  Now they are gone, but the loving memories we spent and shared with them will always stay with us.
Thank you so much Brod Kilay and Sis Perla for the good times.  Sadly we bid you goodbye.  May your good souls rest in peace.

From Manolo Banzon, UPLB'68:

Yes, I think that was the time when a brod was gazing and wondering what was in the moon and at once Kils pointed the lit flashlight towards the moon and told the brod, "Ayan simulan mo nang tumulay sa sinag nang flashlight".  And the brod wittingly said, "Ayoko, baka patayin mo ang flashlight hindi na ako makabalik".

So much fun and adventure during those momentous times.  Lots of laughter and happening forever in our memories.

From Joe Lalas, UPD'69:

Brod Vee, salamat sa 'yong beautiful story of Betan camaraderie -- gnokgnak pagkain ng gnebmak -- I love it.  Even though I had not met Brod Kilay, this story shows how much fun and joy you Brods were having.   I can visualize the gnokgnak and the gnebmak.  SALAMAT.

From Popoy Castaneda, UPLB'55:

Freddie, thank you for the details of Tony and Perla's passing, and I have read of the brods' anecdotes about him.  In our fraternity, there are brods who are exemplary in their accomplishments; and there are brods who are remembered for the warmth and intensity of their fraternal ties.  Tony belongs to the latter group.  Hindi matatawaran ang pagmamahal at pakikisama ni Tony sa kanyang mga Brods.  With Tony, basta Betan O.K.

From Efren Alvarez, UPD'67:

Pare Brod Freddie - I only knew about the death of Brod Kilay and Perla when Brod Tony Velasco arrived here in Munoz this morning and this news certainly made me sad because this couple were very close to us and definitely were nice persons.

I just do not know where to nor to whom I may extend my sincerest condolences but please give my heart-felt sympathy to Millet (as you say is their eldest daughter ) and other children/relatives of course.

Brod Tony Kilay used to come here to Munoz when I was still working at the Office of the Governor in Cabanatuan City with Pare Brod Sflod Revilleza and other Brods.  Also, kindly send me the email address of Emer, U.P. System President, so I can extend my condolences to her and to Brod Pat Roman (or Etam's email add if you have it ).

Thank you very much.  --  KLINKS, Science City of Munoz

From Pogs Gaspay, UPD'68:

Brod Freddie - Please relay also to the Asuncion family my condolences.  Although I never met brod Kilay, I was fully aware how much a stalwart he was to our Los Banos chapter.  Jun Soriano who worked with me at FSDC was my source of a lot of stories about him.  Jun would also visit him often at his farm in Lian when Jun would do fieldwork near that area.  This was in the early 1980's when I was the Regional Director of FSDC for the Central and Southern Luzon regions and Jun was our division head for agri services.  Brod Kilay extended an invitation to me, through Jun, to visit his farm which I never got around to doing before leaving for the US in 1984.  I feel the loss of all Los Banos brods at the passing of another great brod.
With my deep sympathies, Pogs Gaspay
