Sad news inded Kabatch Pol. He used to work at the School of Education printing ofc.

And I often used the facilities of the printing ofc thru him until he eventually left for abroad.

Our UG facility for our student council election days. Brod Popoy was a great help during those opening up his ofc to us.

Over the years, Brod Popoy, our website's most prolific contributor, had sent several articles and paintings. They may be found in three sections (at the side bar) of the UP Beta Sigma International website: in (1) "Memoirs & Reminiscenses", (2) "Artwork" and (3) "Environmental Awareness". My favorite and the one I would wait for excitedly to read and post (as he sent them in 4 Chapters, in 2008) is "A Betan's Journey Thru Time and Space". It is a microcosm of his life from his frat days in Los Baños to his adult life as a frontierman in Mindoro; later, as a fugitive activist, as a painter and as a scuba diver and guide for French oceanographer Jacques Costeau. He also sent in 2023 for publication, in 3 Parts, his remembrances of his family and life in his hometown of Parañaque in "A Passage of an Artist Thru Time and Space".

Popoy also shared with the brods his exquisite paintings of Philippine birds, a talent that was passed to him, of course, by his father, Prof. Dominador R. Castañeda, the former director of the UP School of Fine Arts, 1955-1962, in Parts 1-3 in the "Artwork" section. He also wrote many articles (10) on his exploits in the sea, like the Coral Triangle and Tubbataha Reef, in the "Enviromental Awareness" section.

In recent years, we had chatted about his health issues. I was happy that he seemed to have made much progress with his speech difficulty due to Parkinson's. He also mentioned that he was content and proud of the housing arrangement that the Australian government provides for its senior citizens.

Rest in peace, Brod Popoy. We will not forget.

Brod Popoy Castañeda’55, agriculturist and marine biologist whose knowledge of the Palawan area marine life catered to the research of famous Jacques Cousteau on the Mindanao reef. Both were naturalists . Brod Popoy later in his life devoted his time painting native birds from the Palawan area. Rest in Peace Brod Popoy.

Brod Popoy was a descendant of the very famous Imus, Cavite General, General Mariano Numeriano Castañeda (20 December 1892 – 8 September 1970). He was a Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines from 1948 to 1951 and also served as Military Governor of Cavite during World War II. He was a recipient of the Philippines highest military award for courage, the Medal of Valor.

Naging brod si Froilan noong ’99b, sa batch na “Iisang Bangka.” Tatlo sila sa batch: sina Froilan, Julius Bruce Dimaano, at Rex Rosario.

Sa una niyang jug-a-lug, marahil sa dami ng nainom, “Bard” na ang tawag niya sa mga brods noong gabing iyon. Mula noon, siya na rin ang tinawag na Bard, isang alias na dumikit sa kanya sa mga sumunod na taon.

Masayang masaya si Bard nang makapasok siya sa Beta Sigma. Ang kuya niya kasi noon ay head ng Espaleklek, na ang tambayan ay malapit lamang sa tambayan ng mga brods. Nang malaman ng kuya niya na balak niyang tumuloy sa Beta Sigma, tutol ito noong una. Pero determinado si Bard at nairaos din niya ang pagpasok sa fraternity.

Sa isang magandang pag-ikot ng kuwento, ang anak na babae ng kuya niyang minsang tumutol sa kanyang pagpasok sa Beta Sigma ay naging Sigma Beta rin sa UPLB.

Isang taon matapos silang maging brods, ipinagdiwang ng fraternity ang 50th Golden Anniversary. Napakaraming activities noon, at mas marami rin ang mga rambol.

May isang semester na hindi na nag-enroll si Bard. Pagkatapos noon, nagsimula na siyang magtrabaho kay Brod Leo Balagot sa City of Springs at Splash Mountain.

Napangasawa niya si Abelle, at biniyayaan sila ng apat na anak: sina Enzo, Abiel, at ang bunsong kambal na sina Hana at Yana.

Sa paglipas ng mga taon, nagsikap silang mag-asawa para maitawid ang pang-araw-araw na pangangailangan at mapalaki ang kanilang apat na anak.

Sa huling tatlong taon, nagtrabaho si Bard bilang delivery courier. Bago nito, limang taon siyang nagtrabaho sa kumpanya ng isang brod na nagtapos sa Mapua na may sariling negosyo. Si Abelle naman ay nagsimulang magtrabaho sa isang hardware store nang lumalaki na ang kambal at nakakapag-aral na.

Sa kasamaang-palad, inatake ng stroke si Bard noong Agosto 7. Makalipas lamang ang tatlong araw, noong Agosto 10, binawian siya ng buhay sa edad na 47.
