‘Big Brother Brandy’

When the Big Brothers’ Bounty (BBB) was launched in 2003, its mission was simple yet noble: UPLB brods coming together to help resident members through scholarship grants. Among those who would eventually embrace and elevate that mission was Brod Brandy Ancheta ‘61.

Brandy first learned about BBB through fellow Ilocano Brod William Valdez ’81c. Intrigued by the concept, he reached out and immediately expressed his desire to participate. With characteristic warmth and humor, he insisted that since the College of Veterinary Medicine was located in Los Baños, he was, for all intents and purposes, a UPLB brod.

What began as a contribution to the common pool soon evolved into something far more remarkable. On BBB’s second year, Brandy informed me that he wished to personally fund additional scholarship grants on top of his regular BBB contributions. His only condition was that his generosity remain anonymous.

Thus began a quiet tradition of giving that would benefit numerous resident brods over the next decade.

His first special grantees were Steve Ternura ’03e, a future Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, and Barry Jamora ’03d, a BS Applied Mathematics student. Although many BBB members suspected that Brandy was the mysterious “Anonymous 1” mentioned in annual reports, few realized the full extent of his generosity, and the identity of “Anonymous 2” remained an enduring mystery.

In 2005, Brandy extended his support to Ervin Ocampo ’04e, another Veterinary Medicine student, and Jerico Gascon ’04c, a BS Agricultural Chemistry major. Brandy developed a special fondness for Jerico, a fellow native of Rosales, Pangasinan. What began as a scholarship grant evolved into sustained support, with Jerico receiving Brandy’s assistance for seven semesters until his graduation in 2009.

That same year, Brandy expanded his giving even further by establishing two additional special grants: UP North BBB–LB and UP North BBB–Diliman. Their inaugural recipients were Rico Angelo Apolinario ’08d and Roberto Salamat ’07a of UP Diliman. Throughout this period, Brandy remained an active member of the UP Beta Sigma Alumni Association of Northern California, quietly channeling his success into opportunities for younger brods.

In the second semester of AY 2009–2010, Jec Cabuguason ’04d became the recipient of the Dean Topacio Special Grant, once again anonymously funded by Brandy. Jhun B. Barit ’08d received the UP North BBB–LB Grant, while Roberto Salamat continued as the UP North BBB–Diliman grantee.

In 2010, Jec’s grant was renewed, while Jhun Barit’s award was rebranded as the UP South BBB–LB Grant. Jomar Antuerpia ’08a became the recipient of the UP South BBB–Diliman Grant. Not content with supporting three scholars, Brandy established a fourth scholarship, the Naniong/Bañez/Santiago Scholarship Grant, named in honor of individuals dear to him. Leopoldo Palad ’10c, a BS Fine Arts student, became its first beneficiary. Remarkably, all four grants were renewed the following semester.

The following year, Brandy remained steadfast in his commitment to educational assistance. Aurelio La Guardia III ’04c received the UP North BBB–LB Grant, Jomar Antuerpia retained the UP South BBB–Diliman Grant, and another Fine Arts student, Carlo De Laza ’10e, assumed the Naniong/Bañez/Santiago Scholarship Grant. Brandy also introduced yet another scholarship, the Miguel and Susana Fund, named after his beloved parents. Its first recipient was Cyrus Digma ’11e, a pre-Veterinary Medicine student.

By 2012, Brandy chose to consolidate and rename several of his scholarship programs under the banners of the UP North CA Beta Sigma Grant and the UP South CA Beta Sigma Grant. Their recipients were Leolice Anael Mojica ’12a and Jeson B. Bureros ’11d, while Carlo De Laza continued under the Naniong/Bañez/Santiago Scholarship Grant.

In 2013, future physician Feg Alastra ’06b and Joshua Miguel Malana ’08f became beneficiaries of the UP North CA and UP South CA Beta Sigma Grants. Carlo De Laza once again received the Naniong/Bañez/Santiago Scholarship Grant, while Miko Maki ’13a became a one-time recipient of the Dean Topacio Grant.

During the second semester of 2013, Brandy gave his scholarship grants a more personal identity by renaming them the MPSK-UPD Special Grant and the MPSK-UPLB Special Grant. The acronym MPSK was derived from the names of his parents, a tribute to the family values that inspired his generosity.

The inaugural recipients were Sandino Hesus Laygo ’12c, a Fine Arts student from UP Diliman, and Joshua Malana ’08f. Sandino would continue to receive the MPSK-UPD Special Grant through 2015, while Reynold Rodriguez ’11b later became the recipient of the MPSK-UPLB Special Grant, benefiting from Brandy’s support for another semester.

Beyond his scholarship programs, Brandy was also among the major contributors to a collective effort by several brods to ensure that Fel Alastra could complete his medical degree.

Looking back, what distinguished Brandy was not merely the amount he gave, but the spirit in which he gave. He sought no recognition, no public acknowledgment, and no special privileges. Time and again, he chose anonymity over applause.

Through more than a decade of sustained generosity, Brandy transformed BBB from a scholarship program into a lifeline for deserving students. His legacy is measured not only in the grants he funded, but in the dreams he helped keep alive, the degrees he helped make possible, and the countless lives he quietly changed along the way.

Big Brother Brandy Ancheta demonstrated that the highest form of brotherhood is not found in words, but in selfless acts of kindness. His story remains one of the finest examples of what it means to be a Betan.

As you have probably learned by now, Midwest-USA Brod Rogelio (Brandy) Ancheta passed away on June 23 in Ohio.

Brod Brandy was an active and integral partner in organizing the Beta Sigma Fraternity Midwest-USA. He was elected and served as one of the early Presidents during the formative years of the Federation of Beta Sigma Fraternity Chapters in North America.

It was just a few months ago when we mourned the passing of Dr. Priscilla Ancheta, Brod Brandy's wife of 61 years, on April 12.

Please take a moment to pray for the eternal repose of Brod Brandy, and for strength and comfort for the loved ones he left behind.

We can take solace in the knowledge that Brod Brandy is now reunited with Dr. Prescy in God's loving embrace.

It is with profound sorrow that I announce the passing of our resident brother, Brod Szymon Mabesa ’24H, who departed this life on July 3, 2026.

Brod Szymon was the grandson of Brod Rey Mabesa ’15D, who passed away on October 21, 2024.

He was also the grandnephew of Brod Buddy Mabesa ’68, Brod Rey’s brother, who likewise passed away only recently on February 28, 2026.

He was the great-grandson of our founder, Brod Edgardo Mabesa ’50, and, as of today, the last member of the Mabesa family to have joined our Fraternity.

Brod Szymon was a noble and die-hard Betan whose love and loyalty to the brotherhood never wavered.

Let us remember him in our prayers and ask that the Lord grant him eternal rest and comfort to his family during this difficult time.
