Brod Greg died while. taking a nap, June 28. I only learned today that he was in southern California when he died.

Greg’81d was the third of the Villanoy brothers to join the UPLB Beta Sigma Fraternity, joining his kuya Bobby’78a and Cesar Kulot’78b.
Their dad was the late Ruperto Villanoy’52 from Philips, Bukidnon.
The youngest son could have been a Betan, but opted to attend college in Mindanao.

It is with sadness that I announce the passing this morning July 6 of Brod Manny Genio, Batch’ 63 after a long hospital stay with

weakened lungs. LB based where he was a great & popular extension worker among Laguna farmers. Brod Manny was 80.

Wake will be at St Therese until Wed.

Jolly Manny Genio was the drinking buddy of my late father. One night he came over to our place at Umali and was surprised that there was a lot of Betans. He was so elated that I was a Betan. Knowing that my father was a Vanguard, he told him, “Tama ang pinasukan nyang frat!”

He narrated that when he was a neophyte, a master stapled his back twice! This was when he was reading a bulletin board in the old library. At that time, all staplers were big. The master got suspended by the fraternity. He did not mention his name.

I last saw Brod Manny Genio, Batch ‘63 UPCA, in Bangladesh in March 1997. He was among the prominent Filipino expats that lent their talents/expertise to that then fledgling state, that included Brod Orly Sacay.

The occasion was the OFW event during the Presidential State Visit to that country by then Pres. Fidel V. Ramos. As DFA Director for South Asia, I served as the point person that coordinated the events throughout the 3-day affair.

During our college days, I remember Brod Manny G. as given to his studies, while balancing his interests in extracurricular activities. He was active in Frat deliberations. I particularly remember the way he would puff his cigarettes on a holder, his own way of projecting his personality among strong-minded Brods.

You have earned your rest now in the eternal bosom of the Almighty!

Brod Orly, FVR’s state visit to Bangladesh in 1977 was made memorable by our interaction with Nobel Laureate Professor Mohammed Yunus, founder of Grameen Bank — the microlending institution that changed countless lives, particularly among the rural women of that country. By the way, Mohammed Yunus now serves as the Head of State of Bangladesh, after the student-led demonstrations handed the position to him.
