On Brod Tony Frio…. It is very sad to lose a Brod like him. His honest and
genuine demeanor is irreplaceable. He is a person that you will love when he
throws his constructive and judicious criticism at you. A very simple and honest
person. You will be missed by so many people that knew you, Brother. A better
life with HIM is waiting for you.

And the list gets longer, of our Brods who have gone to the Great Beyond!
In the inaugural issue of the Tumbleweeds Newsletter, I wrote about the epic
campaign that the Beta Sigma waged to get Brod Tony elected as SBO president.
Together with the late Brod Cris Vilar, Brod Tony and I would spend many hours
sharpening our skills at argumentation and debate, to prepare us to represent
our Fraternity in the campus jousts.
He would be among the LB-based Brods that I unfailingly sought out during my
occasional visits to the campus, to rekindle old ties and to relive our
idealistic time as students during the momentous ideology-driven ‘60s.
You have earned your deserved rest in the Heavenly Abode of our Lord Almighty!
Farewell, Kumpadre, Brod Tony Frio. To his bereaved family, please accept my
deepest condolences!

Brod Tony Frio was seated beside me during the Loyalty Celeb at Sis Nonie's
Resort in Bayug. On the table were Brods Rotsen, Paolo M., Ed Carandang, Orly
Sacay. Brods Tony & Rotsen were arguing on the US Presidency & I could see the
stance of Brod Tony just like w/a debating team while I listened intensely. Sis
Annie was on the other table w/ other Sigma Betans. Now, I was saddened in
disbelief of the passing on of Brod Tony. Farewell Brod & may you Rest in
Eternal Peace. My sincere Condolence to the bereaved family & loved ones.

Eulogy from
Brod Ryan Romasanta UPLB ‘04d
To the Family of Brod John Mark “Mure” Malaza,
My condolences to your family for your loss. Please allow me to share some of my
treasured memories of Brod John Mark.
I have fond memories of Brod Mure. Even though I can’t recount some of them in
great detail now, the thing I remember the most about him was his
kind-heartedness and his ability to make you laugh. He had a great sense of
humor and a contagious positive aura that drew most of us close to him. “Minsan
nga dahil sa kalokohan niya at sa kakatawa niyo makakalimutan mo na may problema
ka pala noong pinuntahan mo siya”. If you needed someone to talk to about a
problem, Bossing Mure was the man. He was always there to listen, he was never
judgmental. He never insisted you heed his advice, rather he’d simply offer you
another perspective at tackling a problem. He was a realist and a deep thinker.
To our brods he was kind. To our rivals, fierce. He never cowered from
anyone…not even from his fellow Brod. I remember we both played table tennis
where our respective academic organizations were pitted against each other for
the semi-finals. Like most opponents, he could have just conceded since everyone
was aware that I was once a varsity player. Yet he chose to play against me
taking the loss and that is honor in my book. The Epsilon Chi guy I faced in the
finals later on, I guess wanting to save face, simply conceded.
College and frat life was very challenging for most of us back then. The brods
found comfort and strength by supporting each other academically, monetarily,
and more often than not, “spirit”ually - yes madaming-madaming moni. His
apartment unit in Bangkal was where we’d almost always hang out and where we
talked our hearts out ‘til the break of dawn.
Mure had a very calm demeanor and a very positive outlook at life. He always
looked at the bright side no matter how bad or hopeless a situation seemed to
have been for most of us back then. Above all, I remember how he treated us,
never as just his friends, he treated us as if we were his real brothers...his
family. The very same reason why he was deeply loved and will be sorely missed
by his Beta Sigma family.
Farewell my dear brother. Thank you for the kindness you have shown me and the
brods. We shall see you again someday. Until then, go in peace my brother. We
shall share with your loved ones your stories, your feats, and your life as that
Die-hard Beta Sigman you once were.

Sad news. Should not have been his time yet.
Brod Mure, or ‘Bossing’ because of his resemblance to Vic Sotto, was one of our
contemporaries. We started before the fraternity, from the 1999 batch at
Carantos dorm in Rhodas subd. That was our connection to the brods, as there
were upperclassmen there who eventually recruited us.(Jek, Berong, Dumz) We then
moved to another apartment in Bangkal, where most of the brods shared a unit,
and it became our tambayan after classes, with long drinking and pusoy sessions.
He will always be remembered. Rest in peace, brod.
