Remembering Efren Rivera

Efren Rivera was both a great friend, a great fraternity brother, and much more like a real blood brother.

We spent our last 2 years in college in their first family abode with Sis Patsy and children Eileen, Eldred and Butch at the Sacay Compound.

Brod Efren and Sis Patsy treated me like close kin, a part of this beautiful family. Brod Efren was the dutiful father to the children, a darling husband to Pat, and he and I shared an enduring friendship and brotherhood.

Efren and Pat, while married, were still finishing their studies at UP Los Baños. I saw how Efren raised the family. He put the family first and his studies second.

We shared in the household chores, cooking food, washing the dishes, cleaning the house, raising and feeding the children who were about 1-3 years old at that time. I distinctly remember how Efren and Pat courageously took the roles of being parents, of running and taking care of a growing family, and of being students at that.

Not all, however, was centered around taking care of the family. The Rivera household became much of a social hub among the Betans. Efren and Pat, being members of the Betan family, took care of the brods and sis who visited them. This meant providing hot meals, making room for those who would spend the night in the house, and of course sharing with them the precious and happy memories of the Betan dominance in student activities in the UPLB campus.

Oh nostalgia hits us all now. Efren has left us. It is indeed a very sad moment. A dear friend now lies in the bosom of the Lord. Farewell dear Brod Efren. You will be missed but we will never forget.

The 50’s Brods established and left a legacy of positive campus image in their time as fraternity of choice. Growing up in the Maquiling School grounds, there was always the mention of Beta Sigma especially coming from my teacher, Ms Ellen Bautista, sister of our National Hero Pilot Brod Tony Bautista (God Bless His Soul). My first trip to see a stage play was “South Pacific“ performed by Beta Sigma and Sis Patsy Chan Rivera was a cast member. The “King and I” followed.

The honor goes to all the 50’s. Thanks for the memories.
