Remembering Charles
by Norman Bituin
I had been hoping that I could still meet up with Charles in Baguio for the last time early this year. Sadly not.
As you know, we were among the over 100 applicants of the UP Beta Sigma Fraternity in Diliman in 1965. The 29 men who made it to the gauntlet became UPD Batch '65 "Black Saints". Charles was a member of the Varsity swimming team. He missed our first physical initiation session (of three, plus finals) as he had a must practice for a coming UAAP competition. He had to make it up on the second session. Combining two sessions was tough for Charles. Later in our batch jugalugs, after we became brods, we would recall and tease Charles on how he would exclaim in pain amid blows and paddles with genteel cries of "Ouch!" and "Heavens!". Kakaiba, ika nga.
Charles and I are from neighboring towns in Laguna. Lot of memories of us driving together in my car or in his jeep when we would spend the weekend in Pagsanjan and Sta. Cruz. Sometimes I would sleep over in Pagsanjan parking my car inside their gated yard. His French mom would bake the most delicious French pastries for snacks and breakfast. I would chat with his dad, a government pensionado who wooed the beautiful French teenage lass and brought her to Pagsanjan never to see her native land and family again till she passed. His dad had a collection of coins and other memorabilia from his foreign travels encased in a round display table at the sala. I listened in awe fascinated as he told stories about his collection and his exploits.
After our undergrad, our first jobs were in the pharmaceutical industry as detailmen. Charles worked with Mead Johnson; I with Winthrop Stearns. After two years, I went back to UP for my MBA. Charles enrolled at UERM Med School where he first met Linda in Biochem lab in 1972. According to Linda, they belong to UERMMMC Class '76. They got married in May 1977 during their internship at Baguio General Hospital. Charles and Linda both worked at Benguet Corporation. Charles later worked at Philex Mines while Linda worked at UP Baguio Clinic and UC Clinic. They have four daughters and one son; and nine grandsons.
I requested Linda if she could send me some Macalalag family pictures from my old stomping ground of Pagsanjan. It was touching for me to see Charles' mom and dad again in these vintage photos, exactly as I remember them more than fifty years ago. Together with my personal pictures, I share them with you below.
Rest in peace, kabatch Charles. You will always be in our hearts.

A sad day to end the year. BROD Doc
Charles Macalalag, Black Saints65, and townmate of BROD Glenn Abarquez, has
passed on. May he rest in eternal peace.
Way back in 1972, I was at the point of death. It was something I drank that
paralyzed my whole body, including my muscles needed to breathe. I needed to be
brought to the hospital via an ambulance. No ambulance was available but BROD
NORMAN used his connections in the medical field to get one for me. I was
gasping for breath inside the ambulance and had my tummy and breast pumped in
order to get in some air. Inside the emergency room, I went out of body and my
heart stopped. The hospital’s Chief of Clinics Dr Joven Cuanang was called in to
save me. AND I CAME BACK TO MY BODY and breathing normally! My best friend and
kababayan Dr Ben Lazo advised me to talk to BROD CHARLES MACALALAG, who was also
an intern at UE Hospital, to intercede for a lower medical fee. Dr Cuanang had
the reputation of charging equivalent to the price of a brand new car for point
of death cases. And here’s the result: I PAID ONLY TWO HUNDRED PESOS!
Thank you thank you Brod Doc Charles!!!! And Brod Norman too!!!!

Brod Celerino R. Capco
UP Los Baños '63
April 5, 1946 - January 2, 2025
OBITUARY
[sent by wife Carmelita]
Celerino Reyes Capco more commonly
referred to as Tikboy or Tiks passed away peacefully at home with his family by
his side on January 2, 2025. Tikboy was born in Binangonan, Rizal, Philippines
on April 5, 1946, and was 78 years old at the time of his passing.
Tikboy had a knack for bringing people together whether it be family or friends.
He was raised and lived most his life in Pateros, Philippines where he held
countless gatherings for friends to play mahjong. He attended the University of
the Philippines, Los Baños where he majored in Agriculture and was a member of
the Beta Sigma Fraternity where he formed many friendships and connections he
treasured throughout his life. He moved to Calgary with his family in 1993 and
began to enjoy cooking Filipino dishes and often invited relatives and friends
to share delicious food made with all his love. He enjoyed watching movies,
traveling, good food, but most of all, spending time with his family. He was
creative, crafty, smart, stylish, caring, generous and the most loving patriarch
to the Capco family.
“Love you, love you!” These are the words spoken to his family, and if one was
to assess his life from afar, family was the whole of it. His love given was
unconditional and the pride he carried for his loved ones was obvious from
pictures of a beaming smile while in their presence near his end, as cancer
flowed through his blood causing horrifying pain across his ravaged body. He
spoke these words unconditionally with pride. He represented family, although he
was taken from us far too soon, he left us a map of inspiration to follow in his
stead. Rest well now, Tiks, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother,
uncle and friend. Your love will continue to live in our hearts.
Tikboy is survived and will be deeply missed by his wife of 54 years, Carmelita
Murphy Capco, his children, Ferran Capco (Melanie Tan Capco), Josephine Capco
Wong (Willie Wong), Paolo Capco (Aimee Pili), Sharon Capco Gervais (Aaron
Gervais) and his grandchildren, Laura Gervais, Logan Gervais, Nicole Wong,
Eliana Tan Capco and Parker Capco.
The Capco family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the healthcare
workers from unit 49 at the Peter Lougheed Centre and the Palliative Home Care
team, especially Abigail, who cared for Tikboy with kindness and compassion
until his last breath and Erin, another nurse who did not stop sharing her time
and effort to make Tikboy and the family feel loved and attended to.
Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at Mountain View Funeral Home ~
Arbor Chapel (1605 100 Street SE, Calgary) on Thursday, January 9, 2025, from
