Remembering Dave Gorrez

1) Son David "Dakoy" Gorrez, Jr., UPLB'82

2) Nephew Enrique "Ike" Gorrez Araneta, UPD'71

Danny was the first to join. Frank, Danny‘s twin, joined the following year along with Dave. Dave and Frank are really close. Both are agronomists. Dandy and Danny are animal husbandry majors. All came from Union High Manila. All sang in the choir of the Protestant church.

As far as his commendable achievements in the frat that I was witness to was when he choreographed the Westside story fight scene of the rumble between the Jets and the Sharks. I don’t recall if it was Close Up 1 or 2. It was presented by the frat on campus. He and Dandy were the ones that taught me and my cousin Cesar de la Fuente to play the guitar. He also tutored me in algebra when I was a freshman in UPRHS. He was the first one in the Gorrez family to study abroad and later was recruited by Dole. He was a loving uncle. A great story teller. Popoy Castañeda can probably tell more stories about Tito Dave as a resident brod. I know he was close to Johnny Quijano and Orly Sacay.

The GORREZ BROTHERS: Fernando "Dandy" '59, Francisco "Frank" '52, Danilo "Danny" '51 and David "Dave" '52.

My mom, Lydia, flanked by Frank and Dave. It was Danny and Dandy who were at my finals at Jun Soriano's farm in Novaliches.

Mom is their Ate. She knows all their kalokohan. Well not exactly, but enough to say tht she would disown me if I entered the frat.

(Luckily for us, Ike chose to be "disowned". - NormB)

Brod Dave Gorrez was a cool plant lover. One timewe visited him in his residence at the Umali’s Subd. He showed us his seedling project of Strelitzia reginae (bird of paradise) which he propagated from seeds. He gave us a tour of the project and lectured us about the practices needed to insure long term success in propagation and flowering business. It had a lasting influence in me being a plant lover myself. My deepest condolences and sincere thoughts to Brod Dakoy and siblings, and to the rest of Gorrez clan. May the good soul of Brod Dave Gorrez rest in eternal peace.

I mourn the passing of our dear Brod Dave Sr.’52. He was our neighbor at Umali Subd.

I was lucky that when I was GP he was very active with the Council of Elders.

Excerpts from my memoir (above). During the celebration that night at Gorrez’s home,

Brod Dave confided to me, “Huwag sanang magsumbong si Ducky sa kanyang Mommy!”

Brod Dave paved the way for Beta Sigma & Sigma Beta

to bring this stage play to UPLB.

Brod Dave was also our connection to Louie Reyes to perform in

one of our concerts, Love at its Best. We got a “friendly talent fee.”

Brod Danny was the first to join
Brod Frank is now the only remaining Gorrez Brothers.

In the mid 80’s,a rival fraternity/org was flaunting a member’s strong connection w then PC-INP Chief FVR such that military bodyguards accompanied them in bars & in campus. We had rumbles w them & after a night when we ambushed this group w pillboxes, we got surprised w long arms . We got away in “barrio Alaw“ after a long chase leading to Crossing, LB where our gateaway jeep got shot up & suffered a flat tire.

Dave Sr. (“Beta Sigma Parents Assoc “as we called supportive LB-based parents in the 80's) took up the cudgels for us residents & went a couple of days later to the then Vice Chancellor who was a leading alumni of that org

I could never forget Brod Dave’s words as he relayed to us his simple talk to the VC: “What your group can do, our group can do & do it better…”

And so the armed bodyguards disappeared from campus & never were a factor to contend with again. Those were the days & we always asked Ducky when his father would come home to Umali & when he was,we visited him in Umali Subd. just across Senogara’s & he hosted us with a few drinks & regaled us with his Betan life stories.

Cheers to Brod Dave Sr. in heaven!
