My deepest sympathy to Brod Ed’s family.
Ed was my batchmate in college but I didn’t know that he became a Betan not
until I met him in 1996 when he approached me at the Splash Mountain Resort frat
gathering. I knew he was a member of the Labay, but he was an exception being a
very nice, ethical and mild mannered guy, like the late Brod Monette Locsin. We
were very lucky to have them both. They are both terribly missed.

Just talked to Brod Ed 'Poro' Flores last month after so many many years we lost
contact of him, tnx to Brod Nick Galvez who visited him after my inaanak Brod
Doc Jec Cabuguason was able to locate him. We exchanged our pleasantries & swore
to see each other soon. Brod Ed, is a Die Hard Betan & yes a former Labay. So
when he joined the frat, the more of the Labays got mad of me fiollowed by Brod
Monet Locsin + joining us me being his Sponsor. We had so many things na
pinagsamahan after College days w/Brod Domans Dayrit in Iloilo & Brod Maning
'Daga' Arejola+. Surely we will miss you a lot Brod Ed Poro, RIP. Our sincere
Condolence to Sis Mila (the wife) & Brod Glen. No cheers!!!

Before this picture, we cried and we laughed for seeing each other.
I am saddened by Ed Flores loss. I wished I could have more time with my short
visit to Bacolod.
My sincere condolences to his family.
Nick Galvez
=========================
It seems brod Nick that you have been buddies with brod Poro during 'were the
days'.
I felt that also when my best friend died in an accident he was only 25 y.o. then.

Condolences to the family of Brod Ed Flores may his soul rest in Peace.

We were part of the concerned student during our time. He was a very good
speaker and writer and we went all over different places attending rally and
teach-in. We both experienced sleeping in train station, bus station, slum
places, barrios. When martial law was declared I stayed behind and he continued
on our belief and we lost contact. I am glad that I saw him for the last time. I
was planning to come back next year to spend more time and reminisce our
past.how we did after we left UPLB.

Who would have thought that a long time search for Brod Ed”Poro”Flores would
finally result in him reconnecting with the frat in what would seem like the
happiest moment for us who have known him and for him as well. Thanks to
batchmate Vic Tupaz, Brod Nick Galvez and Brod Jec Caguason. But alas, after
reconnecting he would leave us. His joining the frat had a deeper meaning to him
more than anyone imagined. He was firm and unafraid in his convictions. My
sincere condolences and sympathy to his family and to his son Brod Glenn Flores.
Brod Ed “Poro“ will surely be missed and will be remembered for his courage, strength, sacrifice and love for the frat. May his good soul rest in peace.

A eulogy and tribute: its a miracle that brod Nick Galvez and brod Poro evaded
arrest. They are the brods who lived literally the meaning of the fraternity pin
and Credo. They are remarkable personalities who passionately believe that
things can be changed for the better. In the continuum of the good and nobility
underlying theme of the Frat's 74 years anniversary, we who are the living
Romeos can still pass on this manifesto of nobility to the new generation of
brods who need much guidance in the changing Greek life landscape in UPLB to
keep up with the fraternity vision and mission.
Brods Nick Galvez, Poro, Chito Protacio, Obet Oliva, Jonas Tetangco, Dutch
Aragones, Jojo Alejar, Orly Sacay, Dong Rasco and many other magnificent brods
too many to mention are the fraternity treasures, living symbols and legends of
our rich heritage. To the some of us who did not make it to the fraternity's
Whos Who, fret not, we have the same pride trying to live the Betan heritage and
marked our own successes, unpublished yet true.

August 2, 1970: Master Boy Vera (+) leads the amuyongs of Anak Pawis ‘70c to
their ‘picnic’. Where is Ed Flores here?

Salamat Brod EdC!
As ID’d by VdV’67: at left is Poro Flores, at right is Tony Martinez and Oca Lawas’64 (+) in the background.
Nowe who is the brod in white behind Oca?
Dutch Aragones
=========================
Standing behind resembles Brod Alex
Ramirez.
The “X” marks on Brod Ed Flores’ cheek reminds us why he was baptized “Poro”
(short for porosity) by the ‘Bansag Guru’ Emievoi Roman who was taking soil
science at the time. Now who is the brod in white polo behind Oca?
Vee de Vera
=========================
The one at the back of Brod Oca, standing in white shirt is Dr. Agas, brother of
Brod Jun Agas. During those times, the frat should have a licensed Dr. of
medicine to treat neophytes that collapsed & seriously wounded aside from
the marshall of initiation.

=========================
Oh yeah Mate! You are right! It never crossed my mind. He was not a Brod though
but was close to some of the amuyongs of that batch and was present at the
finals for overseeing physical conditions of the amuyongs especially Brod Rene
Silverio who was staying at the Catalan dorm with RepaDags, the late Snilks and
the late Yaks.

3 of their batchmates are from Lipa City, 2 of whom are my relatives. Horacio
“Hojie” Katigbak (+) is my second cousin and is a full nephew of our late Brod
Teddy Katigbak ‘50; Efren “Boy” Laygo (+) is also my blood relative; Emmanuel
“Boy Munyo” Katigbak is a fearless individual, feared and respected by the
“tigs” of La Salle Taft as well as by any other fraternity or group there, like
the Domino. The “munyo” is from demonyo! I heard that fairly recently, Brod
Emmanuel made a 360 and has shunned all vices and has been a devoted Catholic,
and a loving husband to Rose and father to their children.
I believe the Brod in front and with glasses in the first photo is Efren Laygo.

Of heroes. The first picture was sent to
us UPV Betans by Brod Randy Malayao (rightmost) in 2016. It showcased Betans in
the peace process. Randy represented the NDF. He was joined by
Sigma Betan Concha Araneta.*
On the Philippine government side was Col (now LtGen) Dong Palafox. Third guy
from left was also a Betan but I forgot the name. All heroes.
That said, my chapter grieves for a Betan who was killed on August 5, 2024 in an
encounter in Calinog Iloilo: Benjamin Cortel.
Brod Benj is just 3 years younger than I. Regretfully he left the campus in
95/96 and was unheard of for decades. We stood apart politically, but he is a
Betan brother.
We (still) desire to see the day when all will live in prosperity and peace.
*Sis Concha Araneta killed in an encounter Iloilo on Aug 17, 2024.

Mabuhay ka Brod Gen Dong! Mabuhay ka Sis Concha Araneta!
Mabuhay ka Brod Randy! That’s the
special kind of kinship Beta Sigmans are made of! My salute!
Rest in Peace, Brod Benjamin Cortel! Nakakalungkot man, ang kamatayan mo ay
kasimbigat ng Sierra Madre!
Dakilang bayani ka ng sambayanan!

Brod Benjamin Cortel is batch 1996 UP Beta Sigma Visayas chapter, per our
Unified Directory.
It was our late Brod Randy Malayao (then with the NDF peace negotiating team and
UP Beta Sigma International director) himself who provided the then team working
on the directory the names of our UP Visayas chapter brothers from its founding
in 1989.

Brod Randy & I served under the admin of
Brod Joel Paredes. He always travelled from distances of about 6 hrs to attend
our board meetings. I found out that he would stay in any rented room he could
find. So I requested him to call or text me if he was attending the meeting. If
he did, I would book him a decent room in a decent hotel. We got to know each
other more & got closer as we served the fraternity.
Brod Randy RIP ! You served sincerely & loyally !
BETANS LEAD THE WAY !

A truly great loss for all of us. To think that I just visited his beautiful adopted town of Molo and his UPV campus in Miagao last March.
Rest in peace, Brod Benji. We mourn your passing.
