Remembering Brod Ed Cuevas

Brod Dr. Eduardo Samaniego Cuevas is affectionately remembered by Northwest Beta Sigmans as the founder-organizer and charter GP of the Beta Sigma Fraternity-Northwest USA. A popular medical doctor who operated his private clinic in Tacoma, Ed was a favorite of countless Fil-Am families in the community.

I remember a casual beer-side chat with Brod Ed about his experiences at the Diliman campus when he was fresh from De La Salle-Greenhills High School. Steeped in the ways of barkadas and campus street-smarts, he was a beer jug-a-lug monster like most of us Betans. He confided that he researched quietly about who on campus during that era was “the fraternity na matunog.” Because he really wanted to belong to a worthy brotherhood, he said that the name “Beta Sigma” was the consistent name that popped up in almost all areas: campus athletics, Collegian editorships, Student Council campus politics, ROTC commanders, martial arts, and… of course, “tough guy rumble kings.” He decided easily, he said.

Brod Ed was also the level-headed run-to peace-maker of the NW chapter. He will be sorely missed.

With much sadness, allow me to share that UPLB Brod Vic “The Becket” Lohla ‘68 has joined our Lord. Vic played the lead role in “The Becket”, a play produced and presented in campus by UPLB brods in the late 60’s. He is a US Veteran that served during the Vietnam War, an entrepreneur - and is married to Eve with 4 loving children. Vic and Eve are based in Arlington, Texas.

Brod Vic Lohla together w/his batchmates joined the frat after us. True enough we in our batch were still hot during the initiation. But it was during the finals that he suffered some beatings from us esp. in the grouping session. Brod Vic accepted the blows & I noticed tears flowing in his face. A true Beta Sigman at lutong luto. We were also together in the one act play BECKET, & indeed Brod Vic was a die hard Betan!!! So Brod Vic L., REST IN PEACE, & we will include you in our daily prayers.
