Hi Norm,

Sending you some photos taken during the Betan Rites conducted for Brod Ed Quisumbing, UPLB 56 'Cream of the Crop' at De Sales Hall of the Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Vienna, Virginia on January 12, 2024. This was attended by brods from Chicago, Toronto, New York, New Jersey and Chesapeake Bay.

After the rites, the brods proceeded to my house in Maryland for dinner and fellowship. Sending you some photos of the fellowship we had at our house after the Betan Rites for Brod Ed Quisumbing. This was again attended by all brods who attended the Betan Rites.

If I remember it right, before Brod EdQ passed away, he advanced his BBB dues to a very long multi year plan that shows his belief and willingness to support worthy causes by the frat. Brod Dutch can confirm this. With all he did for our fraternity, it will be a fitting remembrance to have a “Ed Quisumbing Memorial Scholarship Grant“ thru the BBB.

Did anybody notice the leather cross body bag he wore during the 10-10-22 was Polo by Ralph Lauren ? Our late Brod EdQ was stylishly up to date. Now I regret not being able to go with him on his Mindanao trip. We had made previous plan to visit Zamboanga, South Cotabato and Cebu but I backed out and I’m now realizing how wonderful it would have been for me going around town with a down-to-earth man. Now he’s gone and only the many good times remain for all of us to remember.

Death is never a happy thought unless you are suicidally brave. Though scary for the normals, it is inevitable. Since we have a finite time to enjoy life's pleasures and attend to poignant matters shall we do what we want to do. Putting aside small, medium and large decisions thinking that it can wait later, later may never come. But death must not be viewed negatively, but a motivation what is somewhere out there.

Came not so much as a surprise the passing of our friend and brother. He has intimited his many challenges that came his way, he triumphantly passed all of them with a smile and wisdom. Life goes on, success is not measured by achievements, awards, how much gold, land and properties you have but what you’ll leave behind, the love, help you extend to your friends, colleagues and loved ones to him that’s a great measure that you shall be remembered!

ECQ, as he was fondly called in our department, shared his wisdom and strength in policy as well as his professionalism. With his Visayan accent, he cultivated his charm, friendliness to all levels. He helped to promote continuing education programs in all level of the department, securing foreign funding for scholarship, fellowship and other grants.

I recall one time in our conversation about our Tumbleweeds Viber group if he was a member. He confirmed. Ang dami namang messages. Sa isang araw mga 100 padami araw araw. I explained to him na tambayan chat kaya anything goes and just browse na lang Mina sya, Brod you’re needed sa grupo. You’ll be an inspiration and we need your presence.

I’ll miss my friend, colleague, mentor and brother. You’ll be missed by all you’ve helped, touched and walked with, so many of us praying for you. Rest in peace!

One of my fondest memories of our late Brod EdQ’s wit and wisdom is his philosophy on acceptance of a person’s worth at face value. He spots skills and bravado as necessary tools for extending his government programs to the people so much so that his personnel department readily acknowledged why he is so successful. His philosophy: A college degree obtained in 8,9,or 10 years or so isn’t at all bad. In fact,those long numbers of years in college is in a way similar to those that have Master’s or PhD’s and so his philosophy worked well for the Brods under his mentorship. This philosophy made him a firm believer in the BBB as a grant and not a scholarship (after a long scrutiny). Truly an extraordinary,beloved Beta Sigman.

The sudden passing away of Brod Ed Q left me searching for words to express my feelings. Although we’re 14 years apart in joining the frat, he was batch ‘56 and I’m batch ‘70, we became very close especially when we lived in Virginia Beach as he was in Maryland. We frequently got together along with other Chesapeake Bay Brods. Everything’s that has been said and all the photos posted are testament of how endear Brod Ed Q is to all of us. And if I may say, he was a “brod for all the ages” as he connected with Brods from the ‘50s and beyond and different chapters. He will be sorely missed. He might be gone but his memories and legacy will live forever. Please join me and raise your glasses to give Brod Ed Q a Betan send off as he joins other Brods who have gone before us. Rest in Peace brother. My condolences to the bereaved family.

Our brod Ed could be one of last stalwarts of our beloved fraternity. As you said the distance didn't deterd him in attending our events, almost if not always. My association with brod Ed Q goes back in my freshmen years in LB. His batch 1957 of our fraternity is one of the closest to me 'cuase with him and the other brods of his batch, like Flor Tesoro, Andrew Bacdayan together with tatang Ernie T. (he recruited me) guided/helped me being a freshman when I joined our Beta Sigma.

After graduation I was assigned to Davao City encompassing Cotabato, Surigao, Bukidnon and Cagayan de Oro, thereat, just as the same his batchmates of Ben Battung (Reg'l timber mgt. officer then) and Pepe Tagorda (Reg'l land classification chief then ) with other brods, Mel Alconcel '53 ( Dist. Forester then), Moding Canave '53 (reg'l Director) and Nanding Obrero '57 took me in just like a family, the lost brother.

Years passed then when I migrated to US, in Syotol early 2000 I met our brod Ed Q. and the first thing he said to me that always resonates " you again, when will you stop following me" of course in a very loving brotherly way! And the last time I was with him was in Monterry, CA of brod Bobby Pascual's induction.

Such is the UP BETA SIGMA for me. It is my past that continues to linger on. Eerily nostalgic yet refreshing and life-giving at the same time. College days and thereafter would have never been if not for my brod Ed. I feel empty and very sad. I will miss him and we lost a true Betan.

So long, goodbye and may your kind soul RIP brother.
