Just talked to Brod Teps' cousin Jackie. Found dead yesterday at his rented home. Autopsy showed he had a cardiac arrest probably 4 days earlier, on Tuesday.
He was living alone. No reponse yet from immediate family, wife and 3 children.

Kabatch Jose Renee Oconer Navarro was one of four freshmen “amuyongs”in the UPD75C Knights of Loyola. Other freshmen in our batch are Roni Agbayani, Jess Puzon(+), and myself. Was born on July 16, 1958. He was an only child. Studied high school in San Beda and became one of the Bedan Elite in the school. Studied BS Zoology in UP. Worked in computers in Saudi Arabia and in call centers in Manila. Sad to say he ended up estranged from his wife and children later in his life until his death last July 14th. His last message to me on our July 6 batch Anniversary was “yahubam batska”. Never thought we would lose him a few days after.

Dear Family and Friends, Willie was rushed to the ER of Marikina Valley Medical Center this morning after falling off the bed and hitting his head on the floor. CT Scan showed he had subdural hematoma. This afternoon, he underwent craniotomy to evacuate the hematoma and relieve pressure to his brain. His vital signs are now stable. However, we would truly appreciate your ‘HEALING PRAYERS’ in these moments. Thank you very much. Much love, Emma and family.

I don't believe anyone can ever match Brod Willie Nep. He was not a one-act pony. He sang, was full of wit, and was an excellent impersonator.
He painstakingly developed his craft over time, from imitating Popeye in our AS Tambayan to become a true Master of his Calling.

We say farewell to a true legend of UP Beta Sigma, Brod Willie Nepomoceno '69 UPD, who was a master of his craft and a proud and loyal member. He leaves behind many cherished memories.

I first met Willie at the office of Brod Popoy Castaneda, where I signed up to become a neophyte. He had a sheepish grin on his face, as if to say, "You're in for a real treat." During our finals, while all of us "amuyongs" were lined up, exhausted, and feeling sorry for ourselves, Willie yelled, "Ano ang sagot sa martial law?" (which was actually declared the following year). After a deathly silence, one of us neophytes answered, "Himagsikan, master," to which he replied, "You fool!! Beta Sigma!! Ano ka ba?"

Today, I am overwhelmed with sadness and my heart feels heavy due to such a significant loss. This loss is not only felt by the brotherhood but also by his numerous fans in the country. He was an exceptional "impersonator" who used his acts to highlight socio-political issues through satire. Name a politician and even a cardinal and Willie would copy his voice and mannerisms. He stayed relevant for many decades.

During our college days, he was the opening act of many haranas at the girls' dorms and fraternity fundraisers. He made himself available even after college. He was an accomplished artist/caricaturist. Really intelligent, quick-witted, and disarming.

In 2006, the UP Beta Sigma Alumni Chapter of Southern California held a fundraiser featuring Willie Nep. The billboard for the event read "All Of Me," which perfectly encapsulated his approach to life. Despite being a comedian and impersonator, Willie's success came from his authenticity. We are grateful to Brod Willie Nep for sharing his talents with us and the world, and his memory will always be a blessing.

I will never forget the fond memories with Brod Willie here in the US, in Las Vegas and Los Angeles. Despite his busy schedule then and risk of defying his producer, he unhesitatingly agreed to perform in Hollywood in a venue own by the Church of Scientology when Brod Tito de Santos and myself asked him to for the benefit of our Free Medical Mission and Scholarship projects. He also performed for the Brods at our hospitality night and Frat Ball that same long weekend in September 2006. The Beta Sigma Fraternity was the priority for him and I can only reminisce how much he enjoyed just being in the company of the Brods as much as we enjoyed him! Brod Willie is a true, blue blooded Betan. Needless to say he excelled in his craft, the best ever, perhaps forever. Whenever people around mentions his name, I am always quick to say, “Brod ko yan!” You made us proud as Betans Brod Willie Nepomuceno! We will truly miss you! We love you! Rest in Heavenly Peace Beloved Brother!

A MAN OF THOUSAND VOICES WHO GAVE VOICE TO THE FILIPINO

Brod Willie Nep's humor would make us laugh out loud first, and think hard and long afterward.

Rare is an artist like him who would tickle our funny bone, and prick our conscience at the same time.

There will never be another Willie Nepomuceno. When God created him, he threw away the mold for good. Sui generis, ika nga.

If you think there is, and that there will be another, ponder this thought :

Of all the artists born in this musically-gifted land, who wowed audiences from West Avenue to West End, was there ever someone like Willie Nep who reduced powerful men – presidents – into punchlines ?

Would there be another like him who could shift from one character to another by simply tussling his hair ?

He parted his hair, and he became Gringo. Raising it like a bouffant, he became Marcos. Parting it sideways, he was Enrile.

With an economy of moves, and minimal props, he shoehorned himself into one character after another – right before his audience.

Chomping a cigar, and he became FVR. Arching his back, with his hands in the front pockets of his pants, he was Erap. A cardinal’s cap, and two balled napkins stuffed into his mouth, he was His Immensity, Cardinal Sin.

His shows were part magic, part music, all mesmerizing. Kaya hanggang ngayon walang nakagaya.

For half-a-century, he was an equal opportunity alaskador, and from Marcos to Noynoy, his subjects paid good money to personally hear him lampoon them.

They would sit in the audience, lapping up his jokes so creatively written that they wouldn’t know if they’re being praised – or pilloried.

“Kapag hindi ka na-impersonate ni Willie Nep, hindi ka pa made,” was a former Senate President’s lament of how he never made it to the list.

That Brod Willie Nep was able to pull it off – of turning powerful men into comedy material –
was that his spiels were never insulting – biting and belittling they may be – but was never disrespectful.

But it didn’t mean that he held back, on the contrary his was a career of constantly pushing the envelope.

The lore was that he honed his skills in the parliament of the streets. During the First Quarter Storm, he would send thousands of demonstrators rip-roaring with laughter with his spot-on impersonation of Marcos. Others would subvert with incendiary speeches, his was satire.

The other truth was that he roadtested his spiels before the toughest audience. His Beta Sigma brods, with their UP Diliman AS Annex steps tambayan as his stage .

So picture this : A student without power taking on the most powerful man in the land, cutting him down one joke at a time. And what do you see ? A profile of courage.

Years later, Marcos would pay him the greatest compliment when , during EDSA 1, as rumors swirled that he had hightailed to exile, he told reporters that standing before them was the real McCoy and not Willie Nepomuceno.

But Brod Willie Nep was more than an impersonator. He was a gifted singer . He was a painter.

But of all the sobriquets that he got, it was “the man of a thousand voices” which stuck on him, and ironically overshadowed his many other splendored talents

He was a kind, compassionate and generous human.

A man whose acts brought powerful people down to earth kept his feet firmly on the ground. Mahigpit kung kumamay sa mga kapatid.

He responded to calls for fundraising for people in distress, and for causes he championed, and headlined many Frat affairs, gratis, well, except for the customary jug.

I remember one, for then political prisoner Brod Boy Morales, where Brod Willie Nep, famous for his repertoire of songs, ended his spiel with the Dioknoesque longing “that one day we shall be able to sing our own songs.”

By being a man of thousand voices, he gave voice to the Filipino.

Rest well, great and noble Beta Sigman.

Sometime ago l shared a Malmon Me Got Big Hart drawing on one of our Viber or Messenger groups. I did not realize it was not a Banz original, though it looked like it was for the untrained eye.

Being an artist himself, Brod Willie messaged me personally, saying something like we should not be posting the copied works of Brod Banz unless we have permission from his family.

That was the time when there was this issue that the works of Brod Banz must be copyrighted, that his family are the owners.

I realized that Brod Willie was correct, he was also a man of justice.

I wanted to physically attend his final rites.

A great and noble Beta Sigman, may the soul of Brod Willie Nep rest eternally in peace!
