Remembering Brod Ulysses "Ulo" B. Alama

The UPV Beta Sigma Fraternity mourns the
loss of one of its founding brothers, Ulysses “Ulo” B. Alama. He was diagnosed
with oropharyngeal carcinoma in 2020. He succumbed to it on October 10, 2023.
Brod Ulo is recorded as the first Grand Princep of the fraternity in UP Visayas,
1989. He was the Treasurer of the UPV Beta Sigma Alumni Association at the time
of his passing.
Brod Ulo co-wrote a guidebook called “Commercial and Bycatch Market Fishes of
Panay Island, Republic of the Philippines” in 2017. It was around this time when
researchers obtained samples of a fish from markets in the province. In 2017,
this new species of soldierfish was named in his honor, Ostichthys alamai or
Alama Soldierfish.
He started his career with UP Visayas as a Marine Engineman, then as a member of
the Museum of Natural Sciences (MNS), and finally as part of the university’s
Security Service Force (SSF). He studied BS Fisheries while being employed by
the university. He was also an officer of UP Employee’s Union.
Brod Ulo was a recipient of the UP Beta Sigma Fraternity Alumni Association’s
Betan Excellence Award in 2018. Brod Ulo is survived by his wife, Rosanna Alama,
and their three children.

Brod Yuls of UPV was a big help to the Centennial Forest Project of the UP Beta
Sigma Fraternity, which was established at the UPV campus. The said project was
one of our contributions to the UP Centennial Celebration in 2008. The said
project was funded by the UPBSFI and implemented by the resident and alumni
members of UPV's Beta Sigma Fraternity. We lost another die-hard Beta Sigman. No
cheers.
