Eulogy

by Winston Acevedo

As I write this farewell message, tears start to fill my eyes because of memorable moments with Vic and his family. After completing our education, he in Medicine, I in Veterinary Medicine, we met again in the US East Coast. He was an Anesthesiology resident in New York while I was a research fellow at Merck Laboratories in Rahway, New Jersey. Memories start rushing back: he was the baptismal Godfather for our second child, our daughter, Kathryn; the many get-togethers with Lisa and his young family then.

Then, later on, the sudden passing of his wife, Lisa was a devastating loss to Victor and his family. I conveyed our condolence and sympathy as well as prayers for her sudden, unexpected passing. After a few years at Merck, I decided to go back to California to start my private practice. We kept in touch despite the distance between us. He spoke of his son who was a specialist in the US Special Services Armed forces in the Middle East, and his two daughters of whom he was very proud. Many times he had called me about my health condition and health concerns as well as numerous conversations about our family, always reaffirming our fraternal bond, always caring about each other's family.

An evening call, around dinner time, from a fraternity brod informed me of Vic's sudden passing. I was stunned and shocked. I could not believe what I was just told. Just a week before this, we were in a phone conversation exchanging the usual pleasantries. We had a very long conversation and he even spoke to my wife about her kidney problems and other health concerns. I never thought that phone conversation would be the last time I would hear his voice. I was broken hearted, deeply saddened and hardly slept that night, thinking of him and sharing memories of happy times.

Vic sent me a Father's Day card last June, the card saying that I was a good man, a good father who deserves respect and admiration. A short note was enclosed in the card, on which he wrote a wish from him for me to have many more Father's Days to celebrate in the future, and sending his regards to my wife and my family. And as if intuitively, he ended his note by saying, "So long......When I see you in the sun, I shall tell you much."

FAREWELL my dear brother, I will miss you from the deepest corner of my mind and from the bottom of my heart. And as tears flow from my eyes, I'll say again, I love you my dear brother.

Fraternally, and as always,
Winston

Messages

Victor “Vic” C. Dulay MD, UPD‘61 passed away yesterday October 3, 2022 in New Jersey.

A distinguished and accomplished medical doctor, reserved in someways, jolly inwardly when among brods/peers sharing much of arsenal of Erap jokes.

He basically kept to himself and in touch with a few brods/batchmates Lito Tadena+, Joe Llames, Roger Ancheta, Bitoy Acevedo, Vic Ramos, Mat Defensor, Leslie Mangawil among others. The family is planning a very private memorial service.

Our deepest condolences.

My prayers and deep condolences on the passing of Brod Dr. Victor Dulay, UPD’61. He is one of three Dulay Betan brothers - Geoffrey, UPD’55 and Gilbert, UPD’64. I remember doing a mission for Vic at UERMMMC when I was a neophyte. Tall, dark and handsome, his Betan alias was "Nazareno".

Rest in Peace, brod. We will not forget.

On a very personal note, just last week, Victor and I were on the phone chatting and exchanging pleasantries, we had a long conversation; I handed the phone to Vangie because he knows Vangie very well and he was constantly asking how her kidney procedure was going on. I never thought that last phone conversation would be the last time I will hear his voice.

Sadness overcame me tremendously. He was the baptismal Godfather of our daughter, Kathryn. He was in New York City at St . Vincent’s in the Bronx and I was a research fellow at Merck Laboratories in New Jersey. The batch 1961 in Diliman was very close. We kept in touch with each other. I will miss Vic and I feel deeply sad. Please include him in your prayers, I will be grateful.

No cheers and very sad,
Winston ‘61

Mat, I am in accord with your last sentence about us cherishing our lives and living true to the Betan Credo that Pros Cresini emphasized when he met our batch not long after our initiation. He was quite an eloquent speaker, inspirational when he spoke. Perhaps our batch was fortunate enough to have been introduced to Pros Crescini, we were the few lucky batches that have heard Pros speak. If you are reading this, accept my warmest hug and always keep in touch. Kindly send me your email address and phone number for communication purposes. Yes we’re dwindling in numbers now and as always, I thank our Lord and Savior, the Virgin Mary and the Holy Spirit for the blessings and grace they have granted to me and my family. Keep safe and healthy my dear brother and I hope to see you here in the States or there in our beloved homeland.

I’m sorry to hear about the demise of Brod Vic Dulay. He was one of my closest friends in college. We worked together in the Collegian under Brod Lito Imperio. I cannot forget what he did for me during my first fratball as a Betan. Knowing that I didn’t have access to a car, he picked me up and my partner in Diliman in his chauffeured blue Chevy.

My prayers for the repose of his soul. I commiserate with the family especially Brod Gilbert.

My heartfelt condolences for the Dulay family. Brod Dr. Vic was my consultant. He would not fail to attend quick gatherings in NJ & NY in the 80s-90s with Wally Rodriquez, UPD'63; Boy Morales, UPD'60; Pet Grajo, UPD'60; Rudolf de la Rosa, UPD'63.
