From the Joint BSSB-CDO ASSEMBLY: Our heartfelt sympathy and condolences to the family of our Betan Brod Reuben R. Canoy.

Brod Reuben was a Beta Sigman from UP. Brod Pio de Roda, formerly an Undersecretary under Finance Minister Cesar Virata, attested that he was Brod Reuben's sponsor*.

*Web note: Reuben Canoy is not listed in the UP Beta Sigma Unified Directory, thus we cannot ascertain his batch year. Hopefully, UPBSF Central can verify this matter further.

This was revealed to us resident officers during a 1980 Meeting at Intercon Hotel in Makati called by a group of alumni brods, led by Brods Pio de Roda, Teddy Topacio, Frank Conejo, Mel Ching, and Ed Niones re rumbles.

During the NatCon of the BSFAA National Assembly in CDO, Brod Reuben already accepted to be a Speaker. Brod Hec & I were working on that. But, he withdrew in the last hour -- explaining that he didn't really live a life of a Betan.

It appeared that he was in UP for only a year. Then, he transferred to Siliman. And, after he graduated, he didn't have the chance to renew his relationship w/ the Brotherhood.

It is with extreme sadness that I inform you of the passing of Kuya Cris at around 11:40PM, Thursday, July 7, 2022.

Attached is a family photo taken on May 28, 2022 during Mama’s birthday celebration.

Viewing will be at Mabini Chapel at La Funeraria Paz in Manila Memorial Park Sucat. Viewing will start on Saturday and cremation will be on Tuesday.

Laureen and I will arrive in Manila tomorrow (Saturday) morning, and leave on Thursday (July 14) for CDO to attend the burial of Laureen's uncle, Reuben Canoy.

We will not be able to attend the Frat Ball on July 16.

Yes, brods - Kuya Cris passed away last night. There will be viewing starting tomorrow up to Tuesday at La Funeraria Paz Mabini Room, Manila Memorial Park in Sucat Parañaque. We take comfort in the thought that Kuya Cris is now in the Eternal Embrace of our Lord.

I grieve the passing of our beloved Cris. He lived a full life, and he radiated this fullness to many of us, and to many generations of Betans. He served our fraternity in various ways and his legacy will always be part of us. He has been an inspiration to so many brothers. I always loved him since we first met at my office, when I was already an alumnus. He was always there when the brods needed him. I shed a tear when I saw him on a wheelchair attending our fraternity ball. Words will not suffice to appropriately eulogize Brod Cris, the ideal Beta Sigman. What a great honor to have met you up close, my brother and my idol Cris Michelena!

My profound condolences on the passing of Cris. Like all Betans around the world whose lives were touched by "bigger than life itself" Cris, I deeply grieve his passing. Cris was the GP in the summer of '77 when I joined the fold of the Beta Sigma and it was his one-on-one indo (at the Michelena Mansion in Project 8) that gave me the strength and resolve to be a proud Beta Sigma. After Diliman, Cris was my mentor during the MMC days and later my Boss at PECO.
