Good afternoon. This is Amy Colanta, daughter of Eiknarf Colanta '55. I would like to make the following announcement:

Francisco Honorio Colanta
September 22, 1936 - January 5, 2021

We remember and celebrate the life of Francisco Honorio Colanta, '55, who passed away at home, surrounded by family and carers.

He was beloved by his wife, Corazon (Zony, UPLB Sigma Beta Charter), Tatay/Pudra to Agnes and Amy, Manong Boy to his siblings and in-laws, and Eiknarf to his beloved Beta Sigma brods.

He died from respiratory failure due to complications from metastatic colon cancer. It is a disease that is preventable through early screening and detection. We encourage you to get your colonoscopy done beginning at age 45.

His remains have been cremated and are at home. There will be no physical wake. We will begin a nine-day novena tonight, January 6, and we invite you to have your respective novenas at home, if you wish.

We know he is in a better place, enjoying his black coffee while listening to Ennio Morricone.

Brod Frankie Colanta was one of the elders I met early in my time as a Betan in UPCA (now UPLB). When he spoke of the fraternity, I felt his compassion. He can be intense at times, but he also had a sense of humor. I never knew why the resident brods from Tan's dorm called him "hopia," but Brod Frankie took it in jest. Rest In Peace Brod Frankie.

Our prayers are with the bereaved family of Brod Frankie Collanta. Rest In Peace Brod Frankie.

When the Tumbleweeds VG started in the middle of last year, many fun memories we’ve reminisced including those with Brod Eiknarf. His seriousness about the game of basketball was legendary.

The fun “mystery” of “Hopia” was a  long lasting story that was never told unless you ask Brod Popoy Castaneda. His Virginia Farms days, he said, were his gritty experiences of a cowboy. I always admired Eiknarf and his nice pair of cowboy boots which was his official outfit when he was in LB. I remembered, I bumped into him in a bus as I was scrambling for a slot in an American Livestock Show in Houston,Texas. My luck came when I mentioned the agency handling the trip and he said the manager was his close friend and he promised to call the manager and assured me the slot will be mine. After two days, I was on my way to the US.

We are one less today. Rest In Peace Eiknarf. Thank you Eiknarf. We all love you. Thank you for the memories. May your good soul Rest In Peace.

I remembered Brod Frankie 'Hopia' C., always wearing long sleeves polo shirt, even when taking his lunch at Villegas. That was late '69 & I think he was pursuing an MS at UPCA. Never had the chance to meet him again, after I left in 1970. I was back in 1974 & onwards, but failed to make contact with him. Brod Emig N. R., has his own version of the 'Hopia' story. He will be the one to share this with us! RIP, Brod Frankie Honorio C.!

I remember Eiknarf when he used to be Consultant in the DOST in Makati as his reporting office, I sched my business trip to Davao. When he learned about it, he had his official trip to coincide w/ mine. So we arrived Dvo together & since he was booked to a small hotel I told him to join me in APO View Hotel since there were 2 beds in the room. Since our business work was for the next day, we had good dinner, drank couple of beers & visited number of bars. We ended late after a an enjoyable evening. The next morning we had our breakfast & went on to our work w/ him going out of town w/ no assurance of coming the same day. So after w/c we saw each other again in LB after 3 months during a certain occasion! Yes, Bai, Brod, I will miss those days ! RIP!!!

I’m deeply saddened by the passing of brod Frankie C. We’ve been close since that incident playing basketball at the Maquiling School playground sometime in the 70s. We developed a kinship since then.

I feel his passing and will miss him. I say Rest In Peace my brother till we meet again playing basketball.

Nol Banzon

======================

It’s an honor to be a ‘fart’ of the Maquiling School Basketball Diaries. We were goofing around a game that our beloved Brod Eiknarf seriously love and was not having it with us. He grabbed the ball and walked towards Tan’s into his room. Those moments are now immortalized now that Brod Eiknarf has left us. Thanks Brod Nol. Those were our fun times with him.

Vee de Vera

======================

Everthing that's been said of Eiknarf about basketball is all true and during our time he would coach us players with much gusto after every game. Sometimes, you find yourself harder to cope with his analysis than play an entire game! He would alternately discuss with brod James Maranan in all seriousness. But that style is trademark very Eiknarf and players find em altogether pleasant. Walang makapalag sa kanya, his being amiable would rub-off on players as you are left with no choice but to improve your next game.

Postscript, 1/16/2021:

Response from the Colanta Family

Thank you to the residents and alumni of the UPLB Beta Sigma Fraternity for honoring their fellow brod Frank. Also known as Frankie, Eiknarf, or by the infamous, mysterious name "Hopia." It has become a legend of sorts, such that there were conflicting stories over how it emerged at all. One only needs to read the conversation threads in the Tumbleweeds Viber group to understand what the fuss was all about.

When Tito Freddy asked us to prepare a response on behalf of our mother, Corazon, Sigma Beta Charter member '55, my Ate Agnes and myself, the first thing I thought of was the Tumbleweeds Viber group. Our Tatay came across it during the last few months of his life and found in it a diversion, a lifeline to the brods, and the outside world. It was a welcomed distraction from all of the physical pain he endured because of the cancer and the debilitating side effects of his chemotherapy drugs. I do not wish to harp on the drama and the agony our father experienced, but I merely mention these to highlight how much joy reading the messages in Tumbleweeds gave him.

I'd like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the presence of Ibu Ida and Pak Edy of the International Organization of Tetada Kalimasada (TK) who has joined us tonight. I wish to let you know that Tatay remained steadfast in his practice of TK. He would execute the steps while he made his morning coffee, pacing from the living room to the kitchen and back. When he could no longer walk steadily, I would encourage him to practice even while sitting down, assuring him that merely moving his arms is as effective a practice as that of a regular able-bodied practitioner.

Betan last rites via Zoom, Jan. 11, 2021

Like all of you, his own siblings and members of the UPLB community who knew Tatay were shocked by the news of his death. He kept his illness very private. This is so Frank, very much our Tatay. He did not want to be fussed over. He did not want to be an inconvenience. Most of all, he didn't want to present himself any less than the Eiknarf you all knew, the Eiknarf who dressed well. By the way, how he dressed going to all of the fraternity social gatherings was how he dressed at home. His appearance to others mattered to him; it is a form of self-respect he wanted to maintain.

After we made the formal announcement on Tumbleweeds, my sister and I started to read your messages of sympathy. We also read your remembrances of Tatay. We relished getting to know Eiknarf. This is a part of his persona we will never fully encounter. All of you have had the honor and the privilege of knowing him "that way." This knowing of his Eiknarf-ness, his Frank-ness is one of the many gifts we continue to receive even from the Beyond.

We have also read some stories of our Tatay's generosity to his fellow brods. It is the same generosity he extended to his own siblings, tearfully recounted to us through FB Messenger, through Viber.

There was a time when, over several dinners in September, Tatay wondered what his legacy in life was. You can imagine the musings of an 80-something man who was all too aware of his mortality. He felt he had not received the recognition some of his peers have, but eventually Tumbleweeds provided the answer to his question.

Slowly, the brods who knew him from the late '60s to the early '70s started to recount with fondness the brod Frank who did not hesitate to put in a good word for an aspiring younger brod at the beginning of his career life. The brod Frank who gave sage advice. The brod Frank who always broke bread with them.

Every time he'd read a new anecdote on Tumbleweeds - always at night, when he couldn't sleep well - he'd ask me the next day to read it. You could feel his sense of fulfillment as I repeated out loud what a brod said. It's as if his eyes said, "There, that's my legacy there."

Frank Colanta '55 loved his UPLB Beta Sigma. He loved you all. He will always be grateful for the Brotherhood. He will always be a Beta Sigman and proud of it.

Brod Frank Colanta with daughters Amy and Agnes, all UP graduates.
