It is sad indeed that we lost Brod Rod Reyes to COVID. The only thing we can do now is honor his memories and the life he lived as a Beta Sigman. I really didn't know Brod Rod that well except from a couple of encounters during frat balls, but from anecdotes told by several brods, Brod Rod lived up to the standards of Good and Noble Men by his actions. He will surely be missed. My condolences to his bereaved family with prayers of hope and healing.

Brod Pastor Rod Reyes+ had served our fraternity very well, particularly in bringing the Word of God and showing the essence of true Brotherhood in every occasion where the Brothers meet, such as but not limited to our fraternity anniversaries and other special occasions. Fond memories came back about Brod Rod Reyes. He was among my active martial arts students during that time when sessions were held at the vetmed building in Diliman. Patient and never losing temper on simulated fights and never more aggressive as situations are tough. I will always remember that little smile.

Truly another sad day for the Brotherhood.

I have known Brod Rod since he was a neopyte way back in ‘71. I was the MoI for UPD ‘71 D. If am not mistaken, there were 18 who became our Brods. Including 2 who have passed on - Sammy Lazo, Abe Agulto, as far as I know.

We became close during his early Betan years, even when I was already working. (Inspite of being the younger blood brother of our late Beloved RGR, he was never given special treatment, lagi niyang sinasabi sa akin noon). Rod really enjoyed his younger days till he left for the US. He kept in touch even while he was abroad telling me what he was goung through, he kept in touch by texting me regularly. then he became a pastor. I once told him that perhaps an atonement of his “ kalokohans” and I could not believe him at first when he became a Pastor. Then he came back sometime 2018 to join his close high school friend - Sec Guevarra, who got appointed as SDOJ. Rod was in charge of the Secretary’s security team and concurrently in chargeo of the Gov’t’s withness protection program. Including the safe houses of these witnesses.

I always reminded him to be careful as I also knew about his kidney transplant and some other surgeries. He was so dedicated to the Orphanage at Casita at Sta Maria, Bulacan, and we would discuss how to raise more funds. He kept reminding me on the needs of the orphans and would send me photos of the children. Unbeknownst to most Brods, we even met with some foreign investors and he would always remind them to help his favorite project. Rod completely changed when he became a Pastor, always reminding us to be thankful and grateful to the Lord.

I texted him when I learned that he was confined and inquired on how he felt… here was the last reply (this was August 24):
"hirap ako.hard of breathing. lost a lot of strength. not allowed to stand up - effects of covid. challenging situations. no freedom to move bec it causes pain. prayers tremendous help. keep praying. all of you are a big help. trusting God as always."

Farewell Brother Rod, Rest in Peace now for you have done your mission in this earthly life. A noble mission at that. How I wish I could share more to our Brods but there are things to be left unsaid. Will truly miss you and your regular private messages. You were truly a Man of God.

Brods, it is with sadness to inform our Brotherhood that our friend, my batchmate and our dear Brod- Luisito "Louie" Pontigon, UP Forestry Batch 1964 (Devoted to you) had joined his Creator yesterday, Sunday morning, September 5, 2021, while confined in New Era Hospital, Quezon City. Accordingly, the cause of death was due to Covid-19. And being a Covid victim, his body was cremated immediately. Fyi, his wife and his children are all in Canada, as of this moment. Brod Louie was a professional Forester and a retired official of the DENR. We hope to receive additional relevant information that we can share the Brotherhood. In the meantime, may I respectfully request everyone in this chat group to offer prayers for the eternal repose of the soul of Brod Louie Pontigon. A Poignant Memory of Lito Tadena

It is with deep sadness and grief that I'm posting this message about Brod Amado, "Lito" Tadena, batch 1961 UP Diliman. From the beginning, our batch was a tightly knit bunch of guys. Our GP was the late Pablito Pañares who I think is also from Ilocos Sur. He was a tall, very personable leader of men when we were in Diliman. Frankly, the sixties were the glory days of our beloved brotherhood . In every phase of student activity at Diliman, we were at the top. The Collegian, Student Council, musical and drama presentations were dominated by Beta Sigmans. Needless to say, Vanguard was also Beta Sigma territory.

Brod Lito climbed the highest pinnacle of his chosen profession, reaching the prestigious title of President, GLAXO-SMITH Kline pharmaceutical, Asia Division. This meant the whole of Asia. Despite these achievements, he remained a humble, unassuming person. Warm to his brothers and always encouraging and inspiring when he speaks. I will miss him and I will mourn his passing.

In a very personal way, I would like to mention a meeting with him that was so improbable yet so wonderful upon completion. In 2014 when we visited the Philippines, I stayed with my wife's family in their home in the greater Mandaluyong area. It happened to be a weekend but I thought of calling him to inform him that I was in town and wanted to say hello. To my great surprise, he mentioned that he was in Santo Domingo, Ilocos Sur but he told me not to go anywhere because he was going to see me. I figured, wow!! you're gonna drive from Santo Domingo to Manila just for me? He said, wait for me brod, don't go anywhere. I waited, Vangie and I, shortly or maybe longly, thereafter, he arrived. It was the most wonderful evening we had with him; he took us to dinner in a swanky restaurant; regaled each other of our times at Diliman, had a thousand laughs, reminiscing about our initiations and our achievements on campus at that time. For this, I will never forget him. Every time I think about this closeness, this camaraderie, I get teary eyed.

Brod Ben Baterina, a lawyer and townmate of Lito just contacted me today on Facebook and said that the town of Santo Domingo lost a caring mayor, a loving mayor. This was Lito Tadena, a Betan with great accomplishments we should all be proud of.

I beg your patience and I must apologize for this very long posting but I cannot help but share with you this poignant memory of my co-batch ,Amado "Lito" Tadena of Ilocos Sur.

Another titan and a great Betan down. Brod LITO has journeyed towards the great beyond after living a most productive life in many ways. He was the son of the mayor of Santo Domingo, Ilocos Sur, who died at an early age, and Brod LITO took over as the breadwinner, getting all his siblings to finish their respective university courses. Among them was our very own Brod Mayor Floro “Butch” Tadena, who died a few years ago.

As an executive in the private sector, he reached the pinnacle as the CEO of Glaxo Smith-Klein (GSK), a London based multinational pharmaceutical company. In his desire to help the poor people, he initiated the country’s Pinoy Health Pass during his tenure when then President Noynoy Aquino signed the National Health Insurance Act of 2013. After GSK, Brod LITO immersed himself as owner of companies involved in health care. He founded XENO - Ex Employees Now Owners - thus giving dozens of his employees the opportunity to be rich as well.

His brother Brod Butch who maxed out his term as the top local official of Santo Domingo, Ilocos Sur, convinced him to run for mayor, which he reluctantly accepted “for only one term”. It turned out that he was too good to be let go, thus he also maxed out his three terms as mayor even without going out to campaign. As a Beta Sigman, he was a regular donor of medicines during our medical missions. He was a recipient of the UP Beta Sigma Most Outstanding Betan by UP Beta Sigma International, and the Malmon Award in 2017 by UP Beta Sigma Central.

Struck my a disease that attacked his spine, has been on a wheelchair for many years, but despite this condition, he continued to attend our annual fraternity balls. Brod Lito and I shared a dream of producing great citizens among our ranks, starting with our residents. For a start, he donated P100,000 to finance the 2-3 day seminars I conducted for our residents in 5 UP campuses 4 years ago.

Brod LITO is featured in two books: MODERN DAY FILIPINO HEROES and GREAT FILIPINO ACHIEVERS.

Three brods of batch UPD 61 Black Jack are in the picture below taken in Feb 2020 when brod Brandy was in town. Brod Lito treated us to lunch at Makati Shangrila Hotel Chinese Restaurant. I recall a brod called Brod Dr. Winston Acevedo (a batch mate), who is San Francisco-based, and they talked on the phone via messenger or viber. I have not seen so much happiness from batch 61 when they were conversing with one another and when they told stories of their batch adventures to us.

Brod Lito is a kind soul, a true professional, an embodiment of a good and noble Beta Sigman, an exemplary brod. I first met him at the Ninoy Intl Airport way back in year 2000-2005. I was checking in on my flight to Singapore when he approached me. He said he saw my jacket (which I always wear when I am traveling overseas) with Beta Sigma seal/patch) and asked if I am a Beta Sigman from UP. We spent the time at the Kris Spore Lounge waiting for our flight exchanging stories. I did not know then that he was the top honcho of Glaxo. He was that nondescript, humble and simple. I will miss him terribly.
