Eulogy for Brod Jose Jorge “Bimboy” C. Yap, Jr. (UPD Spirit of 66)
Last Rites: 30 Sep 2021
Good evening everyone.
I am Jay Rala, a member of the UP Beta Sigma Fraternity-UP Mindanao Chapter.
First, I would like to express my sympathies to sister Susan, Patricia, Carmela
and Michael for the loss of their loving husband and dad, Brod Bimboy. My
sincere condolences po to you and the rest of the Yap family.
At the same time, I would also like to thank the Yap family for allowing the
fraternity to organize the Last Rites for our dearly departed Brod Bimboy.
I have known Brod Bimboy since 2004—and this the year when I started to be an
active new member of the fraternity’s alumni group in Davao City. For the 17
years of interaction with Brod Bimboy, I can better share with you how I knew
him in 5 words: Brotherhood, Integrity, Loyalty, Equality and Service – these
are the UP Beta Sigma Fraternity’s guiding principles.
A Brother
Brod Bimboy is a brother. He is among the few elderly members of the frat who
takes time to connect and check on the brods.
When Brod Norman Dumalag had stroke in 2018, Brod Bimboy was the first few brod
who called me to ask of Brod Norman’s medical condition, and if there are needs
that require immediate attention. I know that for his part, Brod Bimboy was the
one who swiftly facilitated the issuance of financial assistance to the brod in
need, while he also made sure that he contributed something for the cause.
As a brother, Brod Bimboy also opened to me when he needed support. In Mar 2018,
when his dear mother passed away, Brod Bimboy contacted me and asked to pray for
her. Also, I visited the wake and there was this instance when I saw Brod Bimboy
and Brod Boyting, his younger brother and is also a Beta Sigman, calmly talking
to each other. For me, it’s a good sight to see how two brothers openly and
calmly discussed matters about the family in such a difficult time.
Integrity
I started working with Brod Bimboy since 2012 when we were forming the Southern
Mindanao Chapter of the UP Beta Sigma Fraternity Alumni Association under then
the leadership of Brod Solomon Carpio. I was the association Secretary and Brod
Bimboy was the Treasurer.
There were times when some officers were not available to sign the corporate
checks because the resident brods who asked for financial assistance submit
their proposal on the eleventh hour prior to the implementation of their campus
project. So, over the phone, I would joke and tease Brod Bimboy and tell him
“Brod, pirmahan mo na lang yang check para ma-release and magamit ng mga
residente.. Wala namang nakaka-alam.”
I could imagine Brod Bimboy’s humble smile when he replied: “Brod, hintayin kita
pag mag pa-Davao ka, and we will process the bank check together.” Those simple
words spoken in his usual humble tone of voice strike me of his being honest and
fair, kasi ayaw nyang patulan pabirong sinabi ko. I believe that his integrity
was the reason why he was not replaced as the association’s treasurer for almost
a decade.
Loyalty
My last long face-to-face talk with Brod Bimboy way in July 2019. Nagkita kami
sa may Ateneo before we proceeded to Atty Caubang’s office to have some
fraternity documents notarized. And after that, nag coffee kami sa may bandang
Lanang.
During the talk over coffee, Brod Bimboy shared that after he graduated from UP
Diliman, he joined several brods to run the Farm System Development Corporation
that was then headed by the late Brod Teddy Rey, then he worked with NGOs before
landing to his teaching career in Ateneo de Davao University. I could no longer
recall the other details of the discussion, but what retained to me was his
story of how he survived the initiation process. Sobrang ang tatapang and
strikto daw nung mga Masters nila noon, which was the reason why from more than
a hundred neophytes, 66 silang nag survive. The story was like that, as I
recall.. I believe that how Brod Bimboy, along with his other Spirit of 66
batchmates, survived the initiation made him a loyal Beta Sigman up to his last
days.
He was very active alumni member of the Frat. Even at his 70s, he joined
fraternity events in and off the campus prior to the pandemic. He supported the
Iskolar Guide App launching, and witnessed the signing of MOU in UP Mindanao. He
would join jug-a-lugs but in moderation. The last time we had a jug was with
Brod Danny Abad and some young alumni brods at the roofdeck of Suazo bar.
Equality
Brod Bimboy and I have huge gap in terms of age and membership to the
fraternity. He became a Beta Sigman in 1966 in UP Diliman, while I became a frat
member in year 2000. Meaning, he was 34 years older than me as Beta Sigman.
Despite the age gap, Brod Bimboy never impressed to me that he was a senior
member of the fraternity who demanded respect and attention. He was always the
soft-spoken gentle giant (who Brod Norman Dumalag fondly call him) who treated
the individual brods fairly and on the level.
You know just like brothers, after kamustahan every time we meet, he would
always ask if I have visited Baganga, Davao Oriental. Then he would mention that
the family of sister Susan was so kind to lend their ancestral house to be used
as our office during the typhoon Pablo response operation. Then he would give me
tip on how to deal with the socio-political dynamics in Baganga, which is also
the place of origin of my wife.
You know, he tells these things to me and give these advices like we are equals.
Like there were “no barriers of regions, creed and prejudice” between us. And
there was none, actually, because this is how we are thought in the UP Beta
Sigma Fraternity, which principle has been observed by Brod Bimboy even if he
was far more senior than me and other brods of my generation.
Service
Brod Bimboy is the longest-serving Treasurer and Board Member of the UPBSF
Alumni Association in Southern Mindanao. Sa isip ko nga, nag retire na si Brod
Anggie (UPLB) as president/chairman ng board bago pinasa kay Brod Mon Carpio
(UPD), and then after few years after nag take over si Brod Moding Canave
(UPLB).. Pero ang isang Brod Bimboy Yap nanatiling masugid na officer ng alumni
association.
Actually, gusto na nyang ipasa ang baton sa mas batang brods, but unfortunately
walang chance na mag convene ang association due to the pandemic. And this the
reason why, from time to time, he would call to remind me na dapat daw palitan
na xa..
On 19 Sep, Sunday, before 7:00 in the morning, I received a call from Brod
Bimboy who asked if how soon I can drive from Tagum City to Davao City to
collect the fraternity documents from him. He said he might be incapacitated
soon. I sensed the seriousness in the tone of his voice, and I could hear na
parang malalim yung hinga nya.. I asked kung anong nararamdaman nya, and if
there’s a need for help, but he never said any detail. He probably didn’t want
us to worry about his condition.
I was in an out-of-town trip that Sunday, and so I asked Brod Khalil Guinomla to
check on Brod Bimboy’s condition.. Fortunately nasa Agdao area si Khalil who
then managed to see Brod Bimboy. Khalil as doctor, had difficulty of assessing
Brod Bimboy’s situation at the time.. And we were shocked to learn, few days
later, that Brod Bimboy passed away..
As I end in writing this message, what resonated was my recollection of Brod
Bimboy’s being an old-school Treasurer. He did not record the transactions in
his computer or any electronic gadgets. He relied more on his pen and paper. His
being “old-school” could also be the reason why he didn’t replace his old but
reliable Mitsubishi sedan even though he had the capacity to buy a modern one.
So, in my recollection, Brod Bimboy meticulously and carefully record the fund
transactions every time I visit him to sign and collect the financial documents
in the family’s residence in Lakatan St. While he was writing, he would
appreciate me and Khalil for helping the frat raise funds needed for the
resident chapter’s recruitment efforts. And then hihirit sya by asking why we
still have difficulty in recruiting when we have the funds to run recruitment
campaigns.
To me, Brod Bimboy’s message was clear, and I think what he meant was what is
the point of raising resources when there is no clarity in sustaining the
membership of the fraternity in the chapter.. And to me, this is one of the main
challenges that Brod Bimboy wanted the younger generation of Beta Sigmans to
address.
Brod Bimboy served the fraternity until his last days with us.. Brod Bimboy was
a lover of the fraternity, a brother, and a die-hard Beta Sigman.
To the family of Brod Bimboy, sister Susan, Patricia, Carmela and Michael, I
understand the difficulty of your situation. Brod Bimboy left us so soon that
there were no proper goodbyes. But I believe that’s the Lord’s way of putting an
end to his earthly life so that what we will always recall of him are his good
memories with us.
Once again, sister Susan and the children of Brod Bimboy, my sincere condolences
to your family. Thank you for this opportunity of sharing our memories of Brod
Bimboy.
Maayong gabii ug daghang salamat.

These are really trying times for everyone and the fraternity has also borne a lot of the brunt. Our batch, particularly, has taken 2 hits in a row. I wish I had more interaction with Bimboy when we were in Diliman to have know him better but sadly, it had not been so. I remember him to be a very private person and I was not lucky enough to be in his circle. Perhaps it will be different in the afterlife. Rest in peace kabatch. Say hi to Rolly for me if per chance you meet.

Brod Bimboy was my boss at FSDC. Soft spoken reticent and kind (to me allowing
me to leave work early to attend evening law classes in Diliman).
I spoke to him in one of the Frat balls that he’s retired and living in his hometown Davao. So sorry to hear he’s gone.

So sorry to learn about Bimboy Yap's passing, my condolences. I met Bimboy again, from our college days, on my visit to Davao City in Jan. 2016. Mon Carpio, my classmate-buddy at UP Manila, organized a welcome dinner at Jack Ridge inviting all the brods and sisses. I remember Bimboy was a little late as he was teaching an evening class in Ateneo. It was a very happy fellowship and reunion.
