Remembering Felix

Thank you to to the innumerable BROD-greeters regarding the passing of our Brod Felix, Jr. UPD’56. For the past year, he was being kept alive by his Sigma Betan doctor-wife Manang Virgie (Batch 58) although Felix has been undergoing dialysis treatment for four years.
Felix founded the UERMMC BETA SIGMA in 1960 with the support of then Diliman GP Orly Nicdao. Thus, the UERMMC Brods who visited him late last year call him their “Magellan”, or Founder. This act of putting up the first fraternity in UERMMC nearly resulted in his expulsion from the medical school. He told me that as part of his strategy to keep the then young fraternity afloat, he recruited the top ten medical students of his batch while he did not accept a single post. The founding is a long story that may be told some other time.
Felix was the reason I became a Betan. Even if I am 9 years younger, I already knew about our CREDO, one that was written by Pros Crescini a year before he joined UP Beta Sigma in Diliman.
There are lots of stories about my Manong regarding his life as a Betan. Among them is that he never ran away from any fight, a typical characteristic among brothers. Another is that he is a generous person, sometimes to a fault especially when it was about girl-relationships. An example was when he broke up with a nurse, he told her to keep all the expensive items he gave her BUT then he asked her to RETURN HIS FRAT PIN.
He has a vast collection of fraternity souvenir programs as he would be the easiest person to solicit from. Thus, one could see him in so many souvenir booklets in different Beta Sigma chapters in the US and the Philippines.
By accounts of his closest friends, Brods Pong Lustre UPD'60 and Jeje de la Santa UPD'61, Felix was a man of the world. Even as a medical student, he liked to hang around with brods for jug-a-lugs and at times was a “doctor” during initiations. He was also a “high roller” and he had an extreme love for casinos even when he was still in high school.
The life of Felix has been a good and fulfilling one. He not only left his doctor-wife but his three children - all MDs - and bright seven grandchildren who are now studying in America’s top universities.

They are planning to go back to pay their last respects in coordination with founding Brod El Castro.
I spoke with Brod El Castro who was able to get in touch with Sis Virgie, the wife of Brod Felix V. The remains were cremated and the memorial services will be held once the lockdown is over. Maybe we could plan a Betan last rites by then.

I also join all the brods in offering prayers and condolences on the passing of Brod Felix. Since January when Willie made his "farewell" visit to Felix in Delaware, we have talked about the agony of waiting for the inevitable - of losing a family member. I myself lost three siblings, a brother and two sisters, in less than two years not too long ago. The somber experience is mutual and personal.
Since Felix had emigrated early in the US, the only time I met him was at the UP North Frat Ball in San Francisco in 2001. But being neighbors in Cubao, I had known well their two older brothers: Ric(+), a judge in Pagudpud/Bangui, Ilocos Norte and a Sigma Rhoan; and Ernie, MA, PhD, a University of District of Columbia dean and an Alpha Phi Betan. But we were lucky, I think, to get the two younger Vergara brothers, Felix and Willie, in UP Beta Sigma!

It is with sadness to inform the Brotherhood that Brod Felipe "Philip" Calub, UPLB Forestry Batch 1964 has already joined his Creator last Saturday June 20, 2020 at his residence in Bonfal proper, Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya. He was 73 years old. The cause of death was multi-organ failure due electrolytes imbalance and nasal pharyngeal carcinoma stage IV. His body lies at Carbonel Funeral Home, Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya. Unfortunately, per LGU policy, no final rites can be scheduled as gathering of people more than 10, like in a wake, is accordingly prohibited. The internment is scheduled on June25.
Brod Philip Calub was a professional Forester and retired from the DENR as Regional Technical Director in Region 8, with the rank of Director III. He is survived by his wife - Ma. Paz Calub, four (4) children and four(4) grandchildren. Requesting everyone to offer a prayer for Brod Philip's eternal rest. Maraming salamat po.
