Farewell to a dear friend

by Noli Nolasco

Farewell to a dear friend.

Let me share with you my memories of a good friend.

My friend is the late Brod Andrew Cayetano.

In June 1961 was the first day of the UP ROTC training in the UP Sunken Garden. It was the start of this incredible journey.

I was assigned in the first platoon of the 2nd Battalion commanded by Cdt Captain Rizal Tupaz (UPD'59).

That very first day, I was selected to join the COCC (Cadet Officers Candidate Course) Class 14A.

Succeeding Saturdays were focused on lectures, training and mostly being subjected to discipline, blind obedience and patience by the third class cadet officers.

We had to know their complete names, ranks and aliases as required of being a "ducrot" - meaning the "lowest living mammal in the world."

I did my best to memorize the names of all the third class cadet officers for fear of disciplinary "procedures."

The most dominant of  the 3rd Class Officers were: Betans Eduardo Rosales Soliman, Hannibal Manikan, Wally Domaoal, Vincent Aureus, Adolf Pinlac, Conrado Navarro, Andrew Cayetano and Melchor Rosales; and others were Aganon, Portugal, Tuason, etc.

You gained that needed experience and we adjusted ourselves with the natures of their whims and ridicules as the training went on.

Among the group of these was a quiet, controlled and less demanding of all: Cadet 1st Lt. Andrew Cayetano.

We all knew that he was less demanding and thus all of us made sure that all his requests were met since they were not ‘Petty'.

Our class was a mix of characters: UP High graduates, Manila Boys, and "Promdi", where I came from. The end of the year was a bright year for me since I had gotten to the top the class.

1962 was the year that I realized how difficult life was in the DMST (Dept. Military Science and Tactics) building where we were all billeted without any close and trusted co-officers.

We formed a close bond in our class, all Betans: Santiago Quedding(+), Joel Tamon (+), George Angeles, Felixberto Campomanes, Roberto Camins (+), Ben-Hur Aguila, etc.

This is the year when I was recruited to join the UP Beta Sigma Fraternity batch 1962.

Session, indoctrination, physical challenges, humiliations were part of an open initiation during those times.

A Betan I discovered to be a Bicolano was the late Andrew. He tutored me and gave me advice about each master's idiosyncrasies and physical "sadism" tendencies.

In all our sessions I knew that he was watching me on my "survival."

At the same time, within the confines of the DMST were the challenges of being an underclassman…same physical and humiliating experiences.

I survived sessions 1 and 2. On the third session, a Bicolano master noticed that I was too close with Andrew.

He aggressively kicked me out in the middle of the ongoing session and dragged me by the hair and loaded me to a JD bus for U.P. and gave one peso to the conductor. That was the end of my Betan quest, I thought!

Shame and isolation ruled over me. One person gave me solace and encouragement not to despair - Andrew Cayetano.

October was a big surprise when the then Corp Commander Brod Horacio Morales, the Betan Vice GP, informed me that I was going to be a part of another batch of selected students: athletes, scholars, cadet officers and campus personalities forming the "Special batch’62B"

Encouragement to give it another go - Andrew Cayetano.

I survived three sessions and the dreadful finals in Bo. Rosario, Pampanga….at last and finally a Beta Sigman.

The discipline and training at the DMST still was pervasive. It surfaced that the competition between the UP Beta Sigma and the Upsilon Sigma Phi had reached its height even inside the UP Corp of Cadets.

In 1963, the Cadet Corp got an Upsilon Sigma Phi Corp Commander (a Betan quitter). The turmoil of the fraternity competition inside the Corp had reached its height.

I was third class and with the #1 seniority for the Corp Commander position.

In 1964, the Vanguard Fraternity of the UP Corp of Cadets decided to oust frat members in the organization.

Mostly Betans, we were made to choose to remain in the Corp of Cadet officers by renouncing the affiliation to a fraternity or get out and resign.

All Betans resigned that year from the Corp of Cadet officers. The Upsilon Sigma Phi cheated by pretending to have resigned and then graduated their class and then back in the fold of their fraternity.

In May 1965, I met Brod Andrew at the KAFEPHIL Goodwill Tournament at Pope Pius III gym as part of the karate players representing the UP Beta Sigma Kungfu Karate Klan headed by Brod Johnny F. Chiuten, Jr. He was playing Black Belt. We renewed our friendship at the practice sessions in Area 11 under Brod Master Johnny F. Chiuten.

Brod Andrew belonged to the core of serious and devoted players trained by brod Johnny Chiuten to include: Nelson Guerrero, Titing Valdez, Dong Rafael, Dolf Pinlac, Mario Pasamba, Bibiano "Boygee" Ganza, Bernardo "Banz" Banez, Rey Patiag, Boya Macandog, Erwin Castillo, Mon Tongco and Bobby Pecson.

I joined the UPBSKKK later that summer of 1965 forming the new recruit of dedicated players that included: Jopet Laraya, Ben Sto Domingo, Drigs Bayot, Paddy Padlan. Bobby Camins, Bart Gacad and Tito de Santos.

Andrew graduated and had gone home to Naga City. I was glad he married the lady of his dream, "Fanny"!

Hearing rumours that he and Brod Dolf Pinlac pursued the art of Aikido, I was humoured to hear that they had promoted themselves to black belt rank by getting into a bar fight with at least 21 individuals. An amazing feat, even Brod Johnny and Brod Banz loved to tell that dazzling believable feat the two of them had mustered.

In December 1975, at the Christmas party and reunion of the Black Secrets School of Martial Arts, Brod Andrew was the guest speaker and had done a demonstration of his Aikido advance form with the group. He encouraged the BSSOMA to pursue martial arts seriously as part of the Betan tradition that has to be preserved and pursued seriously.

Every now and then, we communicated through the BSSOMA-Naga which is based in Ateneo de Naga University through the late Brod Ozzie Villaver, the BSSOMA-Naga head instructor.

We were Facebook friends…he sent prayers and good wishes more often and lately.

It was quite a shock to learn about his passing.

I have lost a friend that had shared his encouragements and guidance during my growing up as a Betan.

He was an unselfish individual who had no qualms of helping anyone in need.

Farewell my dearest Friend, Brother and fellow devoted Art Practitioner.

May God give you peace.

Noli’62B

Dear brods,

I just received a phone call from Bridgit Zubiri. It is deep sadness to let you know that another brother has joined his creator. Brod Rolly Zubiri, 68-A Blitzkrieg, passed away early this morning.

Brod Rolly has been recuperating well after his leg amputation a couple of months ago due to complications of his diabetes. He had been performing nightly dialysis on himself as he was given a personal dialysis machine by the Australian government.

But despite his health issues, he was not bed ridden. In fact , he was relatively active and was slowly getting used to moving around his house despite his current mobility issues. He was looking forward to getting aprosthetic leg fitted to him. He said he will be the new 'Pistorius', and then he would break out in laughter.

During my daily afternoon walks, Brod Rolly and I would have our long daily phone chats talking about anything and everything under the sun, but of course , our favorite topic is about the Beta Sigma . Na walang sawa naming paulit ulit na pinag uusapan.

The last time I spoke to him was yesterday afternoon. He was again in his usual happy self. I haven't the slightest notion that this would be the last time I will talk to him. I have lost my best brod here in Australia.

Let us all pray for the eternal repose of Brod Rolly's soul.

No cheers.

My deepest condolences to Brod Rolly’s family, the Aussie Chapter, and the whole Fraternity.

I worked with Brod Rolly at Kabataang Barangay in the late 70’s and fondly remember our friendly discussions.

Farewell Brod Rolly... till we meet again.

Fraternally,

Lem

My heart sinks as I read this sad news. I could understand how Brod Alex Roseus feels with the passing of Brod Rolly Zubiri, a most well-mannered, soft-spoken and a peaceful one. It was an honor to have known him with much fondness, for he too was a mainstay at the AS tambayan.

Even my wife Tess noticed that calmness in Brod Rolly. They were together in the same building during their DAP days.

He was among the brothers who started the Australia Chapter. Two years ago I had a very long phone conversation with him, apologizing that my itinerary would not allow me to travel to Melbourne, but promised to see each other soon.

Brod Rolly, this is the end of your earthly journey but we will meet again in heaven.

Lovingly yours,

Tatang

Brod Rolly Zubiri is among the biggest reasons why I am very proud to be a Beta Sigman. How he was, what he was in life, how he loved the Fraternity. May he rest in eternal peace. My sincere condolences to the family Brod Rolly left behind.

This is a big shock to me.

I spoke to Brod Rolly sometime after his operation. He was in high, good spirits for the entire duration of our chat. I learned of his condition through my sponsor Brod Alex Roseus.

A few days ago I sent a private message to Brod Rolly on Messenger, to cheer him up. I am not sure if he was able to read it. I hope he did. This is a reminder for me, for us how fragile life is, as we would never know what can happen. And I am indeed shocked brods, to learn of Brod Rolly’s passing.

When I was based in Manila back in the early 2000s, Brod Rolly was in town. He texted me (Brod Alex gave my number to him) and said to pick up a bottle of whiskey at the house that he was staying in at that time in Las Piñas. He mentioned in the text "this is for you and the brods."

May Brod Rolly rest in eternal peace. My deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.

No cheers. We lost a great Betan.

Hi Alex,

First, my condolences on the loss of Rolly, whom you had described as your "best brod here in Australia". I happen to have attended the finals of Rolly’s batch, Blitzkrieg, just before I graduated in ‘68 and had known him for a bit of time.

I checked the website (Chapters>Various Chapters>Australia) and saw the pictures at your house with Rolly when you had a fellowship in 2013. Rolly, the MassComm grad, also wrote "Meet the Aussie Betans" in that segment. But please send asap more photos you want to share for his memoriam.

Cheers forever Brod Rolly!

I grieve with all of you on the loss of brod Rolly. I never had a chance to meet with him personally but from my virtual contacts through the grapevine, I enjoyed his presence in all the fraternity happenings during my term.

Rolly was who a Beta Sigman is. Our heartfelt condolences, we extend, to the family he left behind. We pray he rest in peace, Amen.

Oh no! I am truly saddened and shocked by this. Rolly along with Rey Rivera were my sponsors when I entered the frat. We were MassCom majors.

He counselled and encouraged me when I was a neophyte. He sent me on a mission to have many (15) paddles made that were used during our finals.

A soft-spoken and caring brod he was. A noble and die hard Betan.

My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and for the eternal repose of his soul. I didn't even know that was struggling with diabetes.

No cheers. So sad. RIP brod Rolly, until we meet again.

Hi Alex,

Thank you for the opportunity to share our thoughts for our dearly departed brother and friend Rolly.

Saddened hearing of my Kabatch Rolly's passing. I remember him as a soft spoken and good natured person. Though we did not interact much after our Diliman days because we were busy in our careers and raising our families, there is that bond between BETAN Brothers. We have that desire to get together at every opportunity and share happy memories and misadventures (juggalags, rumbles and haranahs).

Last time we met was in February 2013 for our Batch '68A Blitzkrieg 45th Anniversary (see attached photo). It was a very happy occasion. Unfortunately, Rolly was not able to attend our Golden Anniversary Celebration in 2018 for health reasons. His Facebook posts expressed his feelings for the missed opportunity. We surely missed his presence.

We take comfort in knowing that Kabatch Rolly is in a happy place and at peace with the Lord. Our heartfelt condolences and prayers to the family.
