Brod Dr Fel Calora wanted to celebrate his 87th birthday last January 24 with a big party but got sick a few days before. His health continued to deteriorate till today. He will be cremated today straight from a hospital in Bay, his hometown. An accomplished Beta Sigman who inspired and guided younger brods. Rest in eternal peace brother.

I knew Calo very well. He was such a very nice person. We graduated at a time when there were very few graduates in the UP College of Agriculture. Everybody knew everybody. The name of UPLB was a lot later. He was batch ‘52 while I was batch ‘51, the first batch of neophytes. We studied at Cornell University at the same time. I gave him haircuts in exchange for lunch. He was recognized in his profession. But he will be remembered for the good person that he was. He always had a get together during his birthday where we had the opportunity to see old friends. The last time was called off because he got sick. He will be missed.

Just heard this very sad news about the passing of Brod Dr. Fely Calora’ 52. In his passing, we have lost one of the great pillars of our Fraternity. He was a great inspiration to multitudes of generation of Brods, myself included. I remember him as a welcoming and smiling Brod with the great confidence and swagger of a learned scholar combined with the bearing and stern discipline of a leader and soldier. Always smiling , with a great sense of humor and always very welcoming to all Brods, I had the great privilege of working as Treasurer of the UPBSFAA in Los Banos under his leadership when he was President of the BOT at the time. I remember very well the good stories of Brotherhood, wisdom and camaraderie shared by him and enjoyed with him ( together with other BOT’s of the time- Tomsak’81, Jun M’80, Jonas ‘93, etc) during those many days of fellowship and meetings that he hosted at his resort in Bagong Kalsada, Los Banos. Brod Fel always loomed large whether by his mere presence ,and calm demeanor with his confident bearing and his erudite words of wisdom. He was that very rare combination of scientist, scholar, leader and gentleman. I remember he was fond of appearing in his camouflage military Full Battle Dress Uniform during Fraternity functions (he was a reserve Colonel in the Phil. Army and also an eminent UP Vanguard alumni) and I recall one very inspiring sight he conjured up when he appeared as the Betan Alumni representative, in one of the conciliatory meetings between the Brods and another Fraternity, (and attended by University officials), in his full camouflage military BDU! This image plus his impeccable academic credentials, i.e. PhD, Vice Chancellor for Research and Extension, Scientist, Director of a multi-national Crop Protection Company (among others) and together with his calm and steadying words, was such an awe- inspiring and heart-warming sight to behold as a young resident. To this day, my mental image of Brod Fely is in his snappy camouflage military BDU smiling and joking with the Brods!

Brod Fel was never short on offering and giving to the Fraternity even during his retirement years, especially for the cause of the resident brods and campus affairs. I was especially delighted to see posts from his birthday last year with Brods alongside him. He will be tertibly missed.

Scholar, Scientist, Academician, Leader, Soldier, Gentleman, Friend and Brother, he epitomized the ideals of what a Betan should be and what we should always aspire to be. A true Philosopher Warrior King, in the immortal words of Plato.

Our light has been dimmed yet again with the passing of a great Brother in Brod Dr Fely Calora. We will never see the likes of him again. Rest in peace Brod Fely and til we meet again in that Great Hall of the Brotherhood of Scholars in Heaven!
