Ike Araneta and I talked to Raul Lopez UPD’64 Fine Arts on Sunday before he decided to be discharged from Swedish Hospital in Sammamish, WA to spend his last (two) days at home with his family.

Twice, in tears, exactly his last words which he asked me to tell all: “Sabihin mo sa mga brods, mahal ko sila”.

I don’t have the appropriate words to describe yet another loss of a legend. The story of the life of our beloved Raul will be passed on from one generation to another.

I remember Raul as one who had always brought a lot of laughter to many people; his wit, pleasant disposition, antics, at times irreverent humor, and even some episodes at many stages of his life were unique only to him.

For an almost mysterious reason, Raul and I were almost like soulmates although the time we spent with each other was almost limited to the tambayan days. I don’t recall him as a buddy-buddy during those years of extreme revelry. But he and I felt a unique kinship with and for each other.

His daughter Barbara emailed me and some other Brods whom Raul considered as his closest kin. Barbara and her husband were on their way to visit Raul because Raul no longer wanted any further sacrifice for his family. So Raul signed a DNR (do not resuscitate) document. Brods Norman and Ike were able to speak to Raul while at the Swedish Hospital in Seattle. Nag-iyakan raw sila after all the good byes. I also tried to call, but he was released so he could finally rest at his home. Inggit ako sa inyong dalawa, Brods Norman And Ike.

It was a great life for our beloved Raul. He knew his ending and he was able to appropriately leave us all behind.

For all we know, St Peter might just be too happy to welcome another jolly good fellow in heaven.
